It had been her idea to stay put and wait for Wuk Lamat's return. She would stick with it to the last, even if it meant shivering whenever a strong gust blew and missing the soft, warm wool of the alpacas in their absence. Besides, she doubted sleep would come to her even if she tried. Long after conversation had run dry, Mablu had spent the hours thereafter in deep thought, concerning herself with many things. Her dreams, her doubts, the people she'd met today; the challenge she'd taken upon herself to surmount; what she might say to Tobli. She'd experienced more excitement in a day than she had in many a whole year. It left her giddy and trembling, filled to the brim with energy.

A part of that excitement thumped together with the beating in her chest, small and nervous, yet surefooted, like a newborn cria.

Lifting up a hand, she brushes off an errant fleck of snow from her sleeve, grimacing. The cold is so distracting, and Halmarut doubts she'll ever get used to it, even if her body has long lost the ability to succumb to such frigid temperatures. She'd detested the cold long before its permanent grip over the Fourth, the way it blotted out the grass and flowers, rendering landscapes raw and white and driving away her favourite creatures.

Bathu can't stop her hands from trembling at the fingertips as she picks at the delicate blue ribbon in front of her, trying to untangle the knot that holds everything together. A'nimuili had ever been the kind to dress flamboyantly, all ribbons and frilled sleeves and dainty accoutrements; it makes it even more of a challenge to get these damned things off her when they come in so many layers. Surely it can't be practical for an adventurer to dress this way?

"Stage fright?" A'nimuili's eyes gleam with mischief, and Bathu huffs, never mind the thrill it sends through her, a tense excitement that leaves her ears ringing. Her mouth is going dry, despite the things she'd been doing with it just a moment ago, had done to her.

How in Menphina's good name had she wound up here?

“Minfilia! Gods, Minfilia! Thank Twelve you’re here!” Una is breathless and wide-eyed in the Waking Sands. “Look, I’ve just come here from Gridania ‘cause I ‘eard this’s where the Path o’ the—I mean, the Scions are now, an’ I’m awful eager to join up again, but no one ‘ere remembers me! I know it’s been a while, and I can’t even remember some of it myself, but I thought…,”

Minfilia’s baffled expression sinks her heart.

“I thought… I thought for sure you would, ‘cause of how you was such a good leader an’ all.”

Stupid, stupid, stupid. Of course she doesn’t remember. If someone was an exception she’d know by now. No one remembers her and she’s doomed to die in obscurity surrounded by people who don’t know her and don’t care. She doesn’t even care much for glory, not anymore. She just wants to see her friends again. What’s left of them, anyway.

“Sorry,” she says. “Y’must be real busy. I shouldn’t’ve—,”

Just as she turns to leave, a hand grasps her shoulder. Minfilia’s soft smile can’t hide the sadness in her eyes, but Una’s always appreciated her ability to try. At least, she thinks she has.

“Anyone who wishes to aid our cause is welcome here,” says Minfilia. “Especially old friends. Even ones whose faces escape us. Remind me of your name…?”

Una fights back the sting of tears. “Una Tayuun.”

“Una,” repeats Minfilia. She clasps her hands around Una’s, firm and warm. “I look forward to making new memories with you.”

He'd been rotating that simple plea in his mind ever since he'd dragged it out of Toshi, but it remained as baffling as ever. How could he possibly forget him? Any time anything happened, good or bad, Toshi was always the very first person Kimihiro wanted to tell. He liked seeing his eyes light up. He liked the comfort of his warm, low voice. There was no one on all the star he'd rather spend his days with.

Which made it unbearably frustrating that he seemed to be rebuffed at every turn nowadays.

In a flurry of teleportation magicks, Venat alighted on the white stone flooring of Anagnorisis and smoothened out her robes. The sky was streaked in the blue and lilac tones of early twilight, painting a beautiful serenity over the isles that constituted Elpis. It was late, and there were few researchers out and about, which only heightened the sense of boundless solitude that often pervaded the facility in these quieter hours.

Venat strode forward with certain steps, whistling softly. Argos summoned, she mounted him without preamble and set off for the skies, her destination already in mind.

Hien nods politely, though he’s long since lost track of what the man is talking about, and continues pretending to listen while his eyes stray very pointedly to the man beyond the gate. Bram has been running drills for so long now that he practically glistens with sweat in the morning sun. To say it is distracting would be an understatement—Hien's focus on the matter is so absolute it’s dimmed all else. He watches as the samurai lifts the bottom of his shirt to use as a towel for his face, revealing an impossibly tantalizing view of his abdomen, and practically shivers.

Saiyuri subtly jabs him in the ribs and coughs.

Chihiro had asked her what she’d been up to in the past two weeks and she’d been forced to lie, which hadn’t felt great so soon after their reconciliation. What was she supposed to do, though? Telling Chihiro she was smitten with an imperial when her father had already banned them from seeing each other for simply trying to stand up to one wasn’t going to make matters any easier.

“I like having a secret,” she said, in what felt like an expert diversion. “It makes me feel special.”

Hector smiled at her with eyes so soft they seemed to twinkle in the moonlight. "I like being your secret."
