and the reality is all data is produced. you design an instrument to measure something be it sentiment or temperature or frequency of occurrence and map your underlying signal to a useful construct even meters and celsius do not inherently exist absent the tool used to measure them!

and then not too long after that when I was training under our data analytics guru for recruiting I merged a PR that completely borked our reporting for a good couple days 😓 the highs and lows of learning about version control and the impact changes can have lol

do you remember your first PR? i do bc it was so joyously received back in my PeopleOps days I had to make a very tiny PR to update some link in the product org docs so many devs and EM's were stoked to see a PeopleOps'er contributing I got many nice emojis and comments it was lovely

"at the end of 2023 we [Strava] decided to migrate to OpenTelemetry and noticed we had an increase in [tracing] adoption. Weird. That was not our plan." "we actually saw a 50% increase in adoption" (!!!) many orgs would love to have even a quarter of devs actually using tracing

I get asked a lot (from marketing colleagues) why I use the term "ops" or "operators" and to me its about acknowledging the distinct and important role that SRE/Infra/"DevOps" teams bring as a complement to devs

personally love a metaphor when explaining tech stuff, esp in the world of #o11y where terms are overloaded/misunderstood/misapplied I landed on this postal service metaphor 📫 last year when trying to suss out wtf a telemetry pipeline was (more here: thenewstack.io/telemetry-pi...)

So, What Are Agents and Collectors?
If a telemetry pipeline's job is to collect, process and export telemetry data, then what are agents and collectors for? If your head is already spinning, trust me, I've been there. When | first started exploring telemetry pipelines, | wanted to define clear, universal distinctions between agents, collectors and telemetry pipelines.

But the deeper | dug, the more | realized that these terms don't always map neatly to strict definitions — different teams and vendors use them in slightly different ways. That said, it's still helpful to have a general frame of reference.

Agents: The First Mile of Telemetry
Agents are like your local mail carrier — they operate at the source, collecting telemetry from a specific application or system and forwarding it onward to a central location. They typically run alongside applications as sidecars or on the 'same host, focusing on that “first mile" of data delivery.

Collectors: The Middle Mile Aggregators
Collectors are like a regional post office, gathering telemetry data from multiple agents (or directly from applications and infrastructure) before forwarding it to its final destination. Collectors can receive and route telemetry.

Telemetry Pipelines: The Entire System
A telemetry pipeline is like the entire postal system and is responsible for handling observabilty data end-to-end. It does not just forward data but can normalize, enrich, filter and dynamically route telemetry based on your needs.

Slack from me:

| have a silly question....I'm trying to land on vendor/project-neutral definitions for: agent, collector, telemetry pipeline But am hung up on how OpenTelemetry talks about it. The OTel docs say their Collector can receive data, process it (aka what a telemetry pipeline does) but in OTel terms the Collector is made up of pipelines... Am | accurate in thinking this is a difference in semantics? Where Fluent Bit calls itself a telemetry pipeline in the singular despite being able to "house" multiple pipelines and OTel Collector calls itself a collection of pipelines?

There is a meme format going around Bluesky where people share an image of an arrow pointing to the bottom right, where the alt badge is on Bluesky. The gag or punch line of this meme is that when the user selects the alt badge, they get a joke. This is not the intended purpose of alt text.
