I have 3 poems in The Paddler, here’s one: an ekphrastic I wrote after seeing a portrait of a local midwife at a local gallery. Go grab your copy of this issue here paddlerpress.ca/issues-trip-... @paddlerpress.bsky.social
Image shows the following poem:

Nurse Bertha Schmidtke of Ambleside
Maternity Home
Kathryn Reese
After the 2019 textile artwork by Deb Twining.
Your portrait, projected on a curtain.
Draping to the floor. Stitches: silk.
Your figure, over seams, a little fuller
than you were ~
always hovering, as if
there were a window, a drop
of sun to bleach the cloth across
your bursting back ~
you’ve been so much
on your knees. Crumpled, your skirts between
the girl’s feet, your hands a basket, receiving
or holding cloth to torn flesh
and later, in the gas-lit dim, your
eyes straining at your needle, working the silk
so nothing creases while newborn cries
billow in from the next room ~
and now you are silk
preserved away from sun and draughts. You
were always on quiet nights, sure
you would be summoned, if you closed
your eyes. You don’t close your eyes.

Fun question time: what outlet was your very first piece published in? Was it us? Bc yay super cool! Mine (Kristin) was in Paddler Press @paddlerpress.bsky.social and it was an imaginative poem in which my spouse died and I didn’t show it to him first and he hates it 😬🤪😆

We are open for submissions for our 5th anniversary issue. No theme. Just send your stuff: poetry, CNF, art. Hey, short fiction? Maybe we'll try something new. Tell your friends. Heck, tell your enemies. Maybe they'll become your friends.

Poem for Tuesday 13 days. I was honored to have this poem included. Oct 1st, 2025. Thank you, Guest Editor Peter Lilly & EIC Deryck Robertson @paddlerpress.bsky.social —13 days I learned about faith I learned about loss and grief. I learned we don't always get what we want
13 days
Alison P. Birch
on the 13 days, my best friend was in a coma
I learned more about faith than all my Sundays in church
I learned about —faith
I learned about loss and grief I learned we don't always get what we want
or what we feel we need I learned we might have the worst days of our lives
I learned we might feel we will never recover
I learned we may spend hours and days on the floor praying and coming undone begging our god for a miracle that our best friend, or child
or the love of our life will wake up, be ok again
and our faith keeps us going and may be renewed hundreds of times a day giving us strength, breath, and hope I learned that when it feels like hope runs out and maybe they don't wake up or won't be with us here ever again on earth faith can keep us going
faith can fill us with peace that surpasses understanding faith may be
the only thing that can
