I honestly believe this admin is *hoping* for a terrorist attack to both rally around the flag and have a pretext for domestic crackdowns leading into the midterms. No other explanation for this insanity.

105 yrs ago tonight and tomorrow, an organized and resentful White mob raged through the African-American neighborhood of Greenwood in Tulsa, Oklahoma—known as “Black Wall Street” for its wealth—burning and looting 35 city blocks, massacring up to 300 African-Americans, and leaving 10,000 homeless.
The front page of the Wednesday evening June 1, 1921, edition of the Muskogee (Oklahoma) Times-Democrat newspaper.

Main banner headline:

"TULSA COUNTY UNDER MARTIAL LAW
9 Whites Dead; 65 Negroes Killed"

Sub-headlines:

"Negro Section Still Burning; Firemen Quit"

"Former Local Youth Killed During Riots"

"Local Guards Mobilized; Are Held Ready to Entrain for Duty at Tulsa"

"Governor to Take Charge of Riot City"A panoramic black-and-white photograph of the Greenwood neighborhood in Tulsa, showing multiple square blocks where nearly everything as far as the eye can see has been burned to the ground. Smoke from smoldering ruins makes the air hazy in places. Only a handful of people are visible, walking in a group. One car and two horse-drawn vehicles can be seen on a street in the foreground.A black-and-white photograph showing a street in the Greenwood neighborhood of Tulsa where every home and/or business has been destroyed. Piles of bricks are visible next to multiple structures. At least three destroyed cars are also on the street. Small groups of African-American men are visible walking past the ruins, perhaps surveying the damage.A black-and-white historical photograph of a horribly charred, unrecognizable body laying on its back on the ground with forearms raised and hands tightly clenched near some other burned objects, with the handwritten caption, "Charred Negro, Killed in Tulsa Riot, 6-1-1921."

After this presidendy, I think Blue states should allow ICE detention centers run by each respective state. It's way more humane for people, could impair the rush to MO strategy, and the people in question are closer to family and loved ones that can help with their detained cases.

I kinda dont understand how the Trump IRS settlement could move forward. For 1, it seems the IRS/DOJ is acting as part of Trump's team so it seems to have a markedly lack of controversy. For 2, prospective prosecutorial immunity is likely null and void, no?

UPDATE: Judge Perry issued an opinion explaining why she blocked the Texas National Guard deployment in Chicago. She begins with Alexander Hamilton’s rejection of a “preposterous” idea that the Constitution lets a President deploy a State’s militia to a different State for political retribution. 🧵
OPINION AND ORDER
Since this country was founded, Americans have disagreed about the appropriate division
of power between the federal government and the fifty states that make up our Union. This
tension is a natural result of the system of federalism adopted by our Founders. And yet, not even
the Founding Father most ardently in favor of a strong federal government believed that one
state's militia could be sent to another state for the purposes of political retribution, calling such
a suggestion "inflammatory," and stating "it is impossible to believe that [a President] would employ such preposterous means to accomplish their designs." But Plaintiffs contend that such
an event has come to pass, and argue that National Guard troops from both Illinois and Texas
have been deployed to Illinois because the President of the United States wants to punish state elected officials whose policies are different from his own.

OUTRAGEOUS behavior from the Department of Justice; a seasoned prosecutor was fired for reminding a Stephen Miller ally that he was required to obey the Constitution and the valid orders of a federal court.
Documents reviewed by The New York Times show that the July 15 firing of Ms. Beckwith occurred less than six hours after she told Mr. Bovino, the Border Patrol chief in charge of the Southern California raids, that a court order prevented him from arresting people without probable cause in a vast expanse that stretches from the Oregon border to Bakersfield. She was removed not only from her post as acting U.S. attorney in the Eastern District of California, but from the office altogether.

“It’s unjust,” she said of the firings across the federal government this year, in an interview. “We have to stand up and insist the laws be followed.”

Plaintiffs’ direct and circumstantial evidence cannot be ignored. Secretary Noem has
described immigration as an “invasion happening on purpose . . . to remake the foundation of this
country.” ECF 18-15 at 7:14–15. Moreover, at her confirmation hearing, on January 15, 2025,
Secretary Noem stated that TPS “has been abused and manipulated by the Biden administration.”
ECF 18-14 at 104:18–19. Before reviewing any country conditions reports, Secretary Noem also
stated that TPS “will no longer be allowed . . . extensions going forward the way that they are,” id.
at 104:19–21, and commented that TPS was “an immigration scheme[] that make[s] Americans
less safe,” ECF 44-2. When describing what was “seen in different states,” the Secretary stated
that there were “gangs doing damage and harming the individuals and the people that live there.”
Id. at 104:24–25; 105:1–2. After meeting with the Honduran Minister of Foreign Affairs, the
Secretary described the need for “migration management” and “reparation flights.” ECF 18-17.
Her agency broadly described individuals with TPS as “poorly vetted migrants” that included
“MS-13 gang members to known terrorists and murderers.” ECF 18-18.
These statements reflect the Secretary’s animus against immigrants and the TPS program
even though individuals with TPS hold lawful status—a protected status that was expressly
conferred by Congress with the purpose of providing humanitarian relief. See 8 U.S.C. §
1254a(c); H.R. 101-244 at 8; H.R. 101-245 at 11–12. Their presence is not a crime.

Major Garrett at CBS made a major error when describing data on those detained by ICE. Whoops. @austinkocher.com describes it below.
As much as the Trump administration likes to falsely complain that the news media is untrustworthy, CBS did itself—and the broader news media—no favors by asking a question that was factually wrong on three accounts in the span of ten seconds.

First, Garrett says 46 percent of people in detention are not criminals. This is not true no matter how you slice it. If by “not criminals,” we mean people with no criminal conviction, the number should have been 64 percent. If by “non criminals”, we mean people with no convictions or charges, the number should have been 32 percent. I have no idea where 46 percent comes from—but it was inaccurate. Maybe the show got confused like McLaughlin did, and he meant “arrests” rather than “detention”? That would have been closer to my calculations of 44 percent in June.

Second, Garrett says that being “here illegally” is a crime. This is false. Unlawful presence in the United States is not a crime. It is a civil violation that can lead to deportation, but it is not a crime. Entering the country unlawfully is a crime, but not everyone in the U.S. unlawfully (or in ICE detention) actually entered the country unlawfully. This includes people who entered lawfully and overstayed their visa. I realize this is a bit more nuanced than most people appreciate, but it’s immigration law 101.

Third, Garrett referred to immigrants without felonies on their record. This misses the point, and constitutes a common error when people try to be more specific than is warranted. The data currently in the public domain about ICE enforcement activity does not include information about the level of criminal offense, so “felonies” is just a sloppy mistake. I tell journalists this often: do not try to be more specific than what the data says, and don’t embellish. If the data reports “criminal conviction”, just say “criminal conviction.” In fact, Homan rightly points this out in his answer when he says that criminal histories don’t only include felonies, they …
