For me, the toughest part about depression is not even getting out of it, it's maintaining a better mental condition after you've gotten out. It's hard work and everyday effort, and slipping back into the pit is so incredibly simple. It only takes one misstep.

I love fall so much. I've lived in Vermont my whole life and foliage season still seems like such a completely bonkers and beautiful thing to happen every year. It never gets old. 🍂
Photo of a pile of leaves on vibrant dark green moss. I collected lots of fallen leaves of different colors from different plants and trees and arranged them in an egg-shaped gradient going from green at the top to yellow and then orange and then red to darkest reds at the bottom.

A Clark’s grebe (left) and western grebe (right) in courtship for the #Pairs theme of #BirdOfTheDay Okay, they’re not the same species, but they think they are, so I hope this fits the theme well enough. Differences between spp in alt text. #birds #nature #photography #ECK
Four panels of images showing 2 grebes swimming next to each other and making identical movements with their heads. The one on the left is a Clark’s grebe, the eye is surrounded by white and its bill is orange. The one on the right is a western grebe, the eye is surrounded by black and it has a straw colored bill. In California and Oregon 3.5% of these birds hybridize.

Research and identifying resources for reptiles and amphibians, free and without AI 😍 I found this on FB by Micha Petty. Just released in Beta recently but they look like incredible. herpcollective.org/frog-calls herpcollective.org/research herpcollective.org/near-me/
Micha Petty's original post on Facebook:

"Nobody:
Me: I think I'll combine 5.6 million GBIF records with all 3,144 US counties, parishes, and boroughs into a database and make a tool that returns reptiles and amphibians by taxa so that anyone in the US can instantly find out what lives in their backyard.

Test it out out at https://herpcollective.org/near-me/"Micha Petty's original post on Facebook:
"Curious what frog that is calling from the pond? Don't feel like having to dig for the answer? With one tap, this new FREE tool loads the frogs that live near wherever you're at- with multiple call samples, badges for the ones likely to be calling this time of year, and links to more info/photos of each. 🤩

Try it out at https://herpcollective.org/frog-calls/"Micha Petty's original post on Facebook:
"But wait- there's more! Besides the Herps Near Me and Frog Call Finder, I'm also releasing Research Desk.

One search bar. You hit enter and it returns THC content, iNat species info, peer-reviewed research from OpenAlex right there. Want more? Your results are followed by one-click, preloaded buttons that open your search in a new tab on your choice of:

I went to the coast yesterday, there was some incredible, though a bit graphic of encounters. These were all in Salmon Harbor of Winchester Bay: -A group of 5 harbor seals fighting over and tearing apart a salmon -A crow carrying and scavenging a bird skull -A vulture scavenging a fish carcass
In Salmon Harbor of Winchester Bay, At least 5 Harbor Seals were fighting over a large salmon, tearing it apart and eating it. Some seagulls tried to get close but we're unsuccessful at scavenging any left overs. 3 images of a crow carrying a mostly scavenged skull of another bird. I am unsure of it's species. A turkey vulture standing by the water on algae covered rocks scavenging from the mostly eaten carcass of an ocean fish. I am not sure what species of fish it was.

Humaning.
A four-panel comic. In panel 1, a Northern Cardinal and American Goldfinch perch above a busy crowd in a city, looking down. The cardinal says "It's a nice day to go humaning." The goldfinch says "Just look at them. Majestic." In panel 2, a close-up of the two birds. The cardinal says "Nobody tells you that you'll reach a certain age and suddenly get into humaning. I hit 3 years old, and then bam."The birds are looking out over the crowd scene. In panel 3, the cardinal says "Their calls sound funny to us, but each one has a unique meaning." Below, people are saying various things: "I'm tired." "Where's my phone?" "I'd murder a burrito." In panel 4, the birds look down excitedly at a man walking by. The cardinal says "Wait, is that a guy who got dressed in the dark and put his shirt on inside out and backwards?" And the goldfinch exclaims, "Holy... that's a lifer!"

RIP my little sweetheart, I miss her already. She went to the vet yesterday, +$600, bloodwork looked good and was told she probably wasn't eating due to an upset stomach. She acted odd last night but the symptoms matched med side effects. Yet she passed away this morning. $200 for the crematorium.

Close up of Galaxy, the white cat. Especially focusing on his yellow and orange eyes. He was staring at the window with bright, indirect light so I was able to get some cool photos showing details of his irises. Very close up of Galaxy's eye. I just realized that the 23rd was the 5 year anniversary of rescuing Valkyrie. I found her outside our apartment on an over 100°F day. She badly wanted inside and was freshly TNR'ed. She had been a pet at one point, but we were unable find her previous owners. Now she is a happy, chonky, indoor cat.
Valkyrie a few days ago. She is bigger, darker, but still loving with beautiful blue eyes. She prefers people over other cats and is the little queen of the house. Valkyrie 5 years ago. She was under a year old, much lighter and smaller than. She us now. She had blue dye in one ear, stitches in the other, and a shaved belly from being fixed.
She had been a pet at some point, she knew how to use a little box and was fine wearing a collar. We tried to find her family but never did.

I found this on Facebook from a California page. Helpful info.
A diagram of common wildfire terms explained.
Head: the front of the fire, the most active part of the fire.
Flank: the sides of the fire, it fire is given a left and right flank.
Forward Progress Stopped: the fire is no longer actively spreading in that area. It does not mean the fire is out.
Heel: The back of the fire, near where it originated.
Containment: the portion of the fire perimeter secured by control lines.
The Black: the area that the fire has already burned.
Mop-Up: firefighters put out hot spots and smoldering material.
Control line: a barrier crews build or use to help stop the fire from spreading
