ICYMI — Last month, we ran ads in @politico.com & @thehill.com highlighting the importance of zero-emission shipping. ⬇️ ⬇️ ⬇️ Shipping fuels a major share of global climate pollution, but it’s still one of the least regulated sectors. 🧵

Every year, millions of tonnes of used clothing are shipped from developed nations to the Global South — labelled as charity, traded as opportunity.
Polypropylene floats in water, persists in rivers and oceans. Difficult to recycle in practice. Polyester. The world's most used synthetic fibre. It takes hundreds of years to break down. Sheds microplastics with every wash.Spandex. Even 2-5% spandex makes a garment unrecyclable. Cannot be separated from other fibres. Nylon. Durable and non-biodegradable. Production releases nitrous oxide, a greenhouse gas 300x more potent than carbon dioxide.

Textile waste is less than 1% recycled, we need global rules to stop the dumping of textile waste on the global south, and less production of unsustainable plastic fashion. @breakfreefromplastic.org
