Some thoughts on the Portuguese election last Sunday. 1. The main story here is one of left versus right. The right as a whole scores a major win, getting 2/3 of the MPs (likely sufficient for a constitutional amendment, eg). The left as a whole was decimated.

15 years ago, I argued that that the populist radical right was a "pathological normalcy" (radicalization of the mainstream), rather than a "normal pathology" (unrelated to the mainstream). Today, in some areas/positions (but not all ❗❗), the far right is the "normalcy" (i.e. mainstream).

La primera sentencia del Tribunal Europeo de Derechos Humanos favorable a los derechos de las personas trans y a su reconocimiento (Goodwin vs UK, en 2002) condenaba a Reino Unido por no proteger a una ciudadana trans. Las autoridades británica la aplicaron. Hoy tengo serias dudas de que lo harían.

According to the article, the EU Commission "will publish a final list of US products to be targeted in response to the steel and aluminium tariffs tonight and member states will vote on that list on Wednesday." Responses to US tariffs on cars and the 20% "reciprocal" tariff will follow.

What worries me about this verdict is that it will embolden authoritarians to use courts to ban opponents from standing (as Erdogan is doing, as Trump will probably do when needed). They don't differentiate between independent and non-independent judiciary. They use 'what-aboutism'
