It's World Cancer Day and 10 years ago this year I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I can't believe it was a decade ago This is me in hospital waiting to have a mastectomy. I'm smiling but god I was so anxious, so worried I wouldn't wake up from the anaesthetic 🧵

Went onto the Facebook "Medical Consultants" group: it's clear that NHS consultants are spending far more time than we should be worrying about avoiding (or reducing) 5-figure pension tax bills. Sadly, the usual and safest answer is "cut your hours" @rthonwesstreeting.bsky.social

I have now treated 8 colleagues from my own hospital, including major emergencies like cardiac arrest. They ALL regretted how much they’d been working and resolved to reduce stress The most recent said “I don’t want to be the hardest working doctor in the graveyard” Been thinking about that one

I hadn't realised Dr Goldstone has made it here - just using his great tool which has given me some unpleasant warnings - well worth a look as there's still time to reduce large tax charges. (unfortunately for @rthonwesstreeting.bsky.social one of the main answers is not to take on extra work)

It is one of my bug bears in public policy that certain elements of the media get a free ride on attacking the NHS for offering staff a "good pension" whilst ignoring the fact that the treasury has literally never lost money on the scheme. It's a net money earner for the treasury
