I really enjoyed supergreatfriend's LPs of games like Deadly Premonition, Illbleed and D2. I think LPs are a great way to experience interesting but flawed games.

At the time playing FFX on a CRT it didn't even occur to me that some of the scenes were pre-rendered backgrounds, did not realize until years later. I feel they provided a great cinematic sense of scale that is rarely seen in games with over-the-shoulder cameras, e.g. FF7 original vs. remake.

The generic brand of steampunk is cheesy and oversaturated but I think more original works that do their own thing and go dark and weird (like Dishonored, Thief, China Mieville books etc) are cool. In particular Dishonored benefits a lot from Viktor Antonov's distinctive art direction.

Yeah and we think of it as a PC game so much it's easy to forget that without the console versions the game would have never been made at all. Since Sunsoft funded its development in exchange for the console publishing rights.

Filled out a survey for UK authors and illustrators, about AI Licensing and Remuneration. My personal take on this was that there's no combination of money or terms, that would make me want to license my work to train Gen AI. Generative AI is based on plagiarism. It is trained by exploiting workers in the Global South. It is environmentally destructive. It replicates stereotypes, bigotry and other oppressive attitudes. It is highly inaccurate. It is psychologically damaging for those who use it, via encouraging dependency, the development of AI psychosis, or by leading to the erosion of existing skills. It is a way of overturning creative labour markets to cynically enrich tech bros. There is not ethical use of it. No amount of financial compensation makes it worth engaging with.

Bahi JD has really gone far in the world. I remember when he when he was just a commenter on an anime blog I used to read (AniPages Daily) who made GIFs, and it was clear he had talent. Always really inspiring to see him on these big productions.

$400?! In early 90s dollars no less? Though I'm not sure what a full set of print encyclopedias cost back then. I guess from all the old jokes about selling individual volumes in installment plans, it was probably at least as much or more. As a Mac family we bought Grolier instead

Thanks for sharing and cool to see. I loved Lies of P but the map is much more linear than the Fromsoft games, so I imagine it's not as interesting and fulfilling to work on an overall map for it.

I played FF6 emulated on a setup that lagged when doing Mode 7 so the overworld music was always really slowed down. To this day it sounds really weird and fast to me when I hear it played back at the real normal speed.

The easiest way to play them is "Aleph One" which ports the engine to modern systems (assuming it's still active). Although the "M1A1" conversion of Marathon 1 added a weird reference to the game Pathways into Darkness at the beginning of the first level, it's otherwise very faithful.

Yeah the writing of the terminals is great + an early example of fans obsessing over "lore" + they're more atmospheric than Doom etc. It's blasphemy as a former Mac zealot but recently I tried replaying Marathon along with playing Doom for the first time and found Doom to be a lot more fun to play..
