AB 1775 is now law. In June, we stood together in San Diego around a simple principle: no veteran left behind. Now California is delivering, helping transgender veterans come home with support for housing, health care, employment, and the transition to civilian life.

Fifteen years after the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” we can see a legacy that was harder to recognize in 2011. Repeal did more than allow LGBTQ Americans to serve openly. It created a generation of LGBTQ veterans carrying their service into civic life.

Military service creates relationships that can be difficult to reduce to political abstractions. A veteran is also a neighbor, a constituent, a former commander, a colleague. The political question can change because the human relationship has already changed.

Veterans organize. LGBTQIA+ communities gather with them. Friends, commanders, and neighbors join them. Together, they widen the circle of memory and obligation. This is how we come to recognize our country in each other.

The forms differ. The places vary. The obligation does not. Military service is federal. Homecoming is local. Recognition opens the road to obligation.
