As I begin tonight’s journey of scrolling through 13,681 photos, I take a moment to pause and ask runners to, if you truly feel compelled to pose for the camera, please hold the pose far longer than you think you should. But really how about you just lift your head up and open your eyes…

More than 24 hr after it started, a NWS comms issue continues with multiple missing radars and offices providing service backup. These sort of outages seem to be worsening in spite of the fact the vulnerabilities have been known for more than 2 decades. balancedweather.substack.com/p/comms-issu...

Lying in the hammock with my 3yo staring up at the trees… “After you die I will miss you,” she says. “But after I’m dead I won’t be able to watch TV.”
Upward-looking view from a hammock through a dense deciduous forest canopy, with tall tree trunks converging toward a ceiling of mostly green leaves. Small patches of yellow and orange foliage appear among the trees, showing the beginning of fall color.

It’s sunset season in the northern Shenandoah Valley. I’ve missed this view #VAwx

Summer is trying to get one last round in this afternoon… Currently dumping rain and one blast of thunder in Oakton #VAwx
RadarScope Super-Res Reflectivity image from KLWX Sterling at 4:43 p.m. EDT on September 21, 2026, showing widespread rain and thunderstorms across Northern Virginia and the Washington, D.C., region. Yellow, orange, and red reflectivity indicates heavier precipitation concentrated from Centreville and Fairfax through the Burke area, with additional heavy rain extending north toward Potomac and Montgomery County. Photographing an adventure race this morning. First time I covered it, 26 years ago, I used my trusty Sony Mavica with 640x480 resolution. It took 1 photo/10 seconds and the 1.44MB “memory card” (floppy disk) held about 10 images. Things go a little faster now and my 512GB card holds a few more pics

Very heavy rain right now. Probably doing wonders for holiday traffic on 66 westbound #VAwx
A severe thunderstorm approaches over the Blue Ridge, with a turbulent, textured cloud base filling most of the sky. A dark, low cloud feature extends beneath the storm while a gray rain shaft obscures part of the mountains at right. Brighter sky remains near the western horizon.RadarScope reflectivity from KLWX at 3:09 p.m. EDT on September 4, 2026, showing a line of strong to severe thunderstorms stretching from near Winchester through Stephens City and Middletown toward Strasburg, approaching Warren County and Front Royal from the west. Close-up photograph of a well-loved plush fox being held in one hand inside a kitchen. The toy has a cheerful embroidered face with black eyes, rosy pink cheeks, and a smiling mouth, but it shows heavy wear from use. The yellow fabric is faded and frayed, with loose threads, torn seams, and stuffing exposed through a hole at the top of the head. The toy’s rope arms and legs are worn and unraveling. In the softly blurred background are light wood floors, white kitchen cabinets, and part of a stainless steel oven.

No really, I think it’s very cool how Dulles Airport saved so much money on signage directing people to the cell phone lot
Black-and-white photograph of the iconic main terminal at Washington Dulles International Airport, viewed from a moving vehicle on the arrivals roadway. The terminal’s sweeping curved roof and angled concrete columns dominate the scene beneath a sky filled with layered gray clouds. Raindrops and faint streaks on the windshield subtly soften parts of the image, reinforcing the overcast, rainy atmosphere.

20 mins ago our house in the valley had this gnarly shelf cloud pass… now watching the tornado warned cell a little to our west #VAwx
security camera looks west across a wooded valley as a dramatic shelf cloud approaches. Thick, dark gray clouds form a layered, wedge-shaped leading edge stretching across the top of the frame, while lighter rain curtains are visible beneath the cloud base over the distant hills. The foreground remains green with trees and open fields, emphasizing the contrast between the calm landscape and the advancing thunderstorm. The timestamp reads 19:33:55.RadarScope Super-Resolution Reflectivity from the Sterling, Virginia (KLWX) radar at 7:33 PM EDT on July 21, 2026. West Campus (“WC”) is marked just west of Front Royal near Route 55. A broad line of heavy thunderstorms covers the area, with orange and red reflectivity indicating intense rainfall over and north of a spot marked WC toward Middletown and Stephens City. Numerous lightning icons are embedded within the line, illustrating an active thunderstorm moving through the northern Shenandoah Valley.
