This figure examines the effect of generative AI adoption on student performance by comparing students who began using AI tools ("Ever-AI Students") with those who never adopted them across three educational outcomes: homework scores, homework completion time, and exam scores. Each panel combines a histogram showing the distribution of results before and after AI adoption with an event-study plot showing changes over time relative to when students first began using AI. Panel A shows that homework scores increased substantially after AI adoption. The post-AI distribution shifts noticeably towards higher scores than both the students' own pre-AI performance and the never-AI group, while the event-study indicates homework scores rose by around 18 percentage points after six to ten months and then remained stable. Panel B shows that homework completion times fell dramatically. After adopting AI, students completed assignments around 19 minutes faster than before, with the improvement appearing almost immediately and persisting over time, whereas the never-AI group exhibited virtually no change. Panel C presents the opposite trend for examinations. Although homework performance improved, exam scores declined sharply after AI adoption. The histogram shows the post-AI distribution moving well below both the pre-AI and never-AI distributions, and the event-study indicates a sustained reduction of around 20 points after six to ten months. Students who never adopted AI maintained stable exam performance throughout the observation period. Together, the three panels suggest that generative AI enabled students to complete homework more quickly and achieve higher coursework marks, but that these gains were accompanied by significantly poorer performance in independent examinations where AI assistance was unavailable. The figure therefore illustrates a divergence between assisted performance and retained knowledge. Because the analysis is observational rather than based on a randomised experiment, the results demonstrate a strong association but do not by themselves prove that AI use directly caused the decline in examination performance.
