On a related topic, Kirklees Council has a 'Undeclaration of Climate Emergency' motion on the agenda for next week. Given Reform are a minority, it'll be interesting to see how the Conservatives vote. democracy.kirklees.gov.uk/ieListDocume...

'Undeclaration of Climate Emergency' motion from the Reform group of Kirklees Council, for a vote next week. It looks like denying reality will involve a lot of near-term work in rewriting procedures and policies, as well as increasing long-term costs and risks.

We've been rewatching The Good Life, and just seen the episode where the Goods and the Leadbetters resolve a boundary dispute by getting absolutely slaughtered on peapod burgundy. One of the classics.

Last film of the LFF trip was The Fox, a delightfully rude Australian romantic comedy which draws equal inspiration from Japanese folktales and old sweary puppet shows. With the late great Sam Neill as an arsehole of a magpie.

it's not subtle though - the plot involves livestreamed executions to hammer home that this society is a totalitarian hellscape.

Hot Spot is a bracing headfuck - Polish-Greek scifi with 80s stylings, screeching gear shifts, and a fine sense of absurdity. Also, tigers. Would make a good Greece-as-future-dystopia double bill with Crimes of the Future.

The Devils is still an absolute banger, especially in restored 35mm. Also, for full effect, I recommend sitting two rows behind Vanessa Redgrave so you can see her chuckling through all her big scenes.

Having a reread ahead of tonight's big born-again movie premiere. Reading Huxley's comments on public executions this morning just after checking the news seemed very synchronous.

Main crop spuds - at least some survived the badger depredations. Also, with great effort, dug out a recalcitrant gooseberry bush which has produced barely a handful of edible fruit over the past dozen years.

It's the combination of pun and Pixies reference that makes it very on-brand. (Or is that two Pixies references, if it's a comic about a superhero called Tony?)

Big thanks to Chris Marsden for archive digging, and to @huddersfield.exposed for first posting about Robeson's visits earlier this year. I might be writing something shortly.

Robeson had previously visited King's Mill in March 1938, where he was reportedly persuaded to sing a few bars of Ol' Man River with the mill girls. Robeson was an old friend of the mill manager, George Brown, from their university days in the US. The Browns lived for a while in our house.

The Sex Pistols weren't the biggest stars to play a children's party in Huddersfield. On 28 November 1958, Paul Robeson sang at a Children's Thanksgiving Day Party at King's Mill. According to the Examiner, Robeson quietly crooned Loch Lomond to 'forty children of many nationalities'.
