The Sex Pistols weren't the biggest stars to play a children's party in Huddersfield. On 28 November 1958, Paul Robeson sang at a Children's Thanksgiving Day Party at King's Mill. According to the Examiner, Robeson quietly crooned Loch Lomond to 'forty children of many nationalities'.

Oven drying a few of the Armageddon chillies as a test. There are a lot of them and they are, let's say, challenging to cook with.

It's 1986, and Alan Moore is ripping the piss out of the solar model of the atom and crappy marketing design. "Uh, well, it means, like, atoms, atomic power, like that..." It's 2026, and the UK nuclear industry unveils its new stakeholder engagement campaign.

Chillingham Castle - quite the oddest stately home I've visited. The owner, an antique-dealing baronet, carried out a controversial renovation and filled it with odd stock, personal papers, and notes complaining about his "politically-correct son". It felt like stepping into a Simon Raven novel.

Got hands-on with one of the very early-70s fibreglass decorative panels from the Piazza (now being demolished). There are approximately 548 of these. Chris Marsden has so far saved five.

Really enjoyed this absolute monster - almost 1000 dense ragged pages of aristocratic fascists, lowlifes, Victorian interspecies eugenicists, James Jesus Angleton, cabals, conspiracies, heavy petting zoos, herbalists, haslet, Himmler's bog body, and Harold Wilson. Ideal holiday reading, in short.

Those Lindisfarne boat sheds again, in varying states of repair. I was a bit disappointed by the bookshop - not many books, and even less headroom. I could just about sit down comfortably.
Two boat sheds by Lindisfarne Castle, one housing the National Trust bookshop. Gentrified boat shed. Deeply ungentrified boat shed.Barely standing boat shed, looking about as ruined as the priory beyond.

A masterclass in how to make your Nazi character really despicable.
The first time Ernst Stech-Pelz was offered Yorkshire pudding he assumed that it was the cooked by-product of a wool mill, shoddy perhaps, or something akin.

Enjoyed The Death of Robin Hood, even if Kirklees was cruelly written out of the story. Points for giving Hathersage a mention, though. And between this and 28 Years Later, I do wonder if Jodie Comer has a thing about assisted dying.

Also enjoyed Andi Walker's Wrapped in Cold Hard Comfort, a new work in slate and chaise longue.
Taking the form of an articulated slate quilt draped over a chaise longue, the sculpture challenges assumptions around softness, pliability, and domesticity traditionally associated with textiles. By working with slate as their material, Walker emphasises contrasting qualities of weight, hardness and discomfort. The physical act of stitching into its resistant surface is a metaphor for resilience, mirroring the daily persistence required by those living with chronic illness, disability, or adversity. As the work weathers and elements of it gradually disintegrate, it also reflects on permanence in outdoor sculpture.

Still working through Le Salon des Horreurs, and tickled by the mistranslation of 'cathartic' in 'sans doute une collision catarrhique'. That makes it sound really unpleasant.

'Heritage crafts' are great and all, but their viability as a trade does generally depend on the continued existence of a suitably large and wealthy middle class to buy the products. And that's at massive risk from AI capitalism. www.theguardian.com/money/2026/a...
