One of my favorite parts of "The Aztecs" is a strange musical motif that can only be described as the "menacing marimba." Happens a lot when the villains are conspiring. Why the composer, Richard Rodney Bennett, associated evil with an upbeat jingle-jangle is beyond me, but I'm glad he did!

John Ringham as "Tlotoxl" is exactly my kind of scenery-chewing villain. Iago meets the Joker meets Snidely Whiplash (with a hint of Wile E. Coyote). Hatches scheme after outrageous scheme, only to be outplayed at every turn, yet never stops twirling his metaphorical mustache. A sinister dork.

DOCTOR WHO REWATCH: "The Aztecs." Barbara becomes a goddess, Ian becomes a pro wrestler, and the Doctor becomes the Cocoa Bean Casanova. (Susan, however, becomes irrelevant to the plot.) A sci-fi-free outing that shows WHO doesn't need techno-gimmicks to tell a fine historical tale. Classic.

With the current Director General of the BBC praising AI garbage, it's nice to be reminded of DOCTOR WHO's handcrafted roots. The tactility of everything onscreen. Give me scale models and rubber suits and stage-bound sets any day. Imagination over expediency. "Marinus" has it in spades.

The Voord are interesting antagonists, at least visually. Tokusatsu frogmen with cool-ass helmets. I shudder to think of the modern "update" they might receive, though, if they ever showed up again. The Marvel treatment, maybe? Armor plating? Panel lines? Piping? Yeesh.

William Hartnell's Doctor softens a bit. Admits he can be wrong... sometimes. Still an old coot, but not the maniacal chaos gremlin from the previous two installments. Barbara still thinks he should kick rocks, though, and rightly so. Although, who can resist his new "Battle-Damaged Rambo" look?

DOCTOR WHO REWATCH: "The Edge of Destruction." Classic sci-fi shenanigan story in which all of the characters lose their minds and shout "J'accuse" at each other. Like THE THING, BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, or that one episode of the X-FILES where Scully keeps asking Alaskan scientists for stool samples.

Lost media. Shame the broadcast rights are tied up. Gonzo's performance was hailed as "sincere, but deeply off-putting." TV Guide gave it ⭐1/2. IMDB doesn't even list it, strangely.

NOT WITHOUT MY CHICKEN, a Lifetime Original Movie, starring Gonzo, Camilla, and S. Epatha Merkerson. "Theirs was a free-range love." It would have been a breakout role for the Muppet. Alas, it was not to be.
