Most butterflies spend winter as caterpillars, chrysalises or eggs however, some species can spend the winter as adults. These butterflies will enter a period of dormancy to survive the cold temperatures, some even store glycerol which acts like an antifreeze!

Hunting prey such as lizards, voles and other songbirds, Shrikes are a unique family of carnivorous songbirds but it's what they do with their prey that makes them so fascinating. They impale their prey on spikes and thorns, often within a favoured area in their territory known as a larder!

Unique in that they’re the world’s only aquatic passerine, Dippers are a common sight along fast-flowing rivers. They're fascinating to watch as they forage in strong undercurrents despite their small size, emerging onto rocks clutching insects or clumps of moss to line their nests 🪹
