GLP-1s may be linked to vision loss, but risk ‘very, very low’
ANAHEIM, Calif. — Even though studies have linked GLP-1s to development of nonarteritic anterior ischemic neuropathy, the risk is not great enough to warrant stopping the medication, according to a speaker at Academy 2026. “We need to follow the data, not so much what is being reported in the media,” Leonard V. Messner, OD, FAAO, professor of optometry at Illinois College of Optometry, said. “The best approach is vigilance, not a knee-jerk response.” He emphasized that “the overall absolute risk remains very, very low.” In the U.S., lawsuits are underway against GLP-1 manufacturers Novo Nordisk

Neurotrophic keratitis: Management strategies across the spectrum
Welcome to another edition of CEDARS/ASPENS Debates. CEDARS/ASPENS is a society of cornea, cataract and refractive surgery specialists, here to discuss some of the latest hot topics in ophthalmology. This month we are discussing the management of severe neurotrophic keratitis (NK), an uncommon but severe degenerative disease of the cornea characterized by compromised corneal sensory innervation. Oxervate (cenegermin-bkbj, Dompé), a recombinant human nerve growth factor for topical administration, has been a game changer in the treatment of patients with NK. It is FDA approved but requires a

ANAHEIM, Calif. — Treating dry eye disease with both Xiidra and Miebo led to significant improvements in signs and symptoms, with most patients still using both drops months later, according to data presented at Academy 2026. The finding comes shortly after Bausch + Lomb announced that an eye drop combining Xiidra (lifitegrast ophthalmic solution 5%) and Miebo (perfluorohexyloctane ophthalmic solution) would be evaluated in a phase 3 study. “As a clinician treating many patients with moderate to severe dry eye disease, I regularly incorporate pharmaceutical treatments with different mechanisms

The management of keratoconus has evolved substantially over 3 decades. While corneal transplantation was historically the only surgical option for advanced disease, intracorneal ring segments (ICRS), first implanted by Walton Nosé in 1993 and later popularized by Joseph Colin, offered a less invasive way to improve corneal symmetry and reduce irregular astigmatism. Corrigendum to “Evaluation of the Impact of Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid on Diabetic Retinopathy in a Large US Population-Based Cohort”. Am J Ophthalmol. 2026;291:63–72
The authors regret two typographical errors in the abstract and manuscript that resulted in inconsistencies with their corresponding figures. First, the hazard ratio for the 1-year diabetic retinopathy (DR) progression analysis was reported as 0.69 in the abstract and manuscript Results section. The correct hazard ratio is 0.79, consistent with the database and published Figure 2. Second, for our DR complications analysis, the abstract and Results section incorrectly report the 6-month to 3-year timeframe as statistically significant.

FDA to remove references to animal testing in safety regulations
The FDA has issued a final rule that would remove references to animal studies in its drug safety regulations, as part of a larger effort across HHS to reduce what it calls “unnecessary animal testing” in biomedical research. In addition to the new FDA rule, which would take effect Feb. 4, 2027, the NIH simultaneously announced a series of new initiatives intended to develop and promote alternatives to animal testing, including more than $88 million in funding for biomedical infrastructure projects nationwide. “We are moving HHS toward a new era of biomedical research that

Subbasal Nerve Plexus Alterations Following Ocular Proton Therapy in Uveal Melanoma Assessed by Corneal Confocal Microscopy
Melanomas of the iris, choroid and ciliary body are known collectively as uveal melanomas (UM). The age adjusted risk ranges from 5 per million in the US to 8 per 1 million in northern European countries, making it the most common intraocular tumor in adults.1,2 Unfortunately, the risk for metastatic development reaches 50% with minimal chances of survival post-metastasis.3,4
