One minor nit: "I don’t doubt [...] that owner John Stanton wants to win." I actually *do* wonder if several owners of major North American sports teams do want to win, at least at the same desire level that fans want their teams to win. Winning is fun, but expensive, and no real downsides for not.

Who have the two best autographs in the history of baseball and why are they both Expos players? (This post is likely bait for two mutuals and I make no apologies)
Scan of a baseball card featuring Larry Walker in a grey Montreal Expos uniform. The card has a gradient red border from white to red. The word "Expos" is in the top right; bottom right reads "Topps certified autograph issue" and "Larry Walker". Walker is photographed just as he completes the swing of his bat. His autograph, with swooping L and W characters and a strikingly tall K, is in blue on the bottom third of the card. Top right of the card reads "Topps" and, in a circle, "1990-2025 35th anniversary".Scan of a baseball card featuring Andre Dawson in a Montreal Expos uniform. Dawson is photographed as he begins his swing. The card has a gold border and is numbered 19/50. Text at the bottom reads "Topps certified autograph issue", "Andre Dawson", "Outfielder". The Montreal Expos stylized eMb logo is in the bottom left, the letters "MON" in the top left above the words "Topps Chrome". Dawson's autograph, a compact swirling affair with a bold A, slight tickmark above the last E in his first name, a near-perfect uppercase cursive D and long tail of the last "n" appear in blue ink on the bottom third of the card.

More trainsets are absolutely a good thing. Now that we will have them, we need the track to go with them and this, I believe, gives us more leverage. "We're ready. You can be, too." (We've already improved the experience at Pacific Central!)
010
Wes Mills 🥌 @oowm.org · 28/09/2026
If "2x a day" refers to Seattle to Upper Vancouver, the biggest barrier is the owner of the tracks on both sides of the border. BNSF won't sell us slots and BNSF/CN and British Columbia can't agree on track and bridge improvements along the aging Fraser River segment.
110
Wes Mills 🥌 @oowm.org · 28/09/2026
Exactly. I have enough bitterness just moving throughout life, I don't need to splash it on new trainsets on a service I use a few times a year. There's more than enough bitterness to go around and it can swamp the moments of joy we have; it's on us to not let that happen and celebrate joy.
050
Wes Mills 🥌 @oowm.org · 28/09/2026
And no one, not Noah or Transit Trekker or any other reasonable advocate you will ever meet is claiming such. But we *are* claiming that new kit is great and a massive improvement over what currently rides the rails between Eugene and Upper Vancouver. I choose joy to keep my advocacy going.
160
Wes Mills 🥌 @oowm.org · 28/09/2026
How you are presenting is bitter. It is not kind or helpful to shut down people who are happy about an improvement because that improvement is not 100% of what it needs to be. We get to celebrate wins and the new trainsets are a win. Nothing about the new sets forecloses getting more done.

Portland, Oregon has a rule that if a business is open for people inside of a car, it is open for people outside of a car. Even the 24-hour McDonald's has figured out a walk-and-roll-up window. I'm not asking for full indoor service if no one else has it, merely access regardless of mode.

Wes Mills 🥌 @oowm.org · 28/09/2026
I have no current information, but in the past the answer is they do not. Burger King restaurants around here, notably, do take walk-up (and bike-up!) business at the drive-thru when the lobby is closed. I've done this many times.
020
Wes Mills 🥌 @oowm.org · 28/09/2026
It's both not something I'm going to apologize for, nor will I excuse a business pulling that stunt because "they know better" than I do about how to run their business. Especially in a transit-rich region like Puget Sound, barring access to non-drivers is unconscionable.
240
Wes Mills 🥌 @oowm.org · 28/09/2026
As someone who doesn't drive and doesn't have a car, yes I do take it a bit personally when a business doesn't allow access to people who didn't drive there. It's a fundamental tenet of my advocacy, that people who don't drive get to participate in society and commerce as anyone else.

Why does it bother you that I am pontificating about Starbucks not taking walk-up business? At no point did I say "but if they were open for walk-up, I would", but them making this change *does* speak to how the company is run. I object to any business denying access to people outside of cars.
120
Wes Mills 🥌 @oowm.org · 28/09/2026
Wait... neither one of you has been to Portland? HOW? *I've* been to Portland (on Amtrak) like a dozen times and that seems too few. Y'all are both like the Quintessential Pacific Northwest Poasters. I refuse to believe this; I'm being set up for a fantastic joke, aren't I.
130
Wes Mills 🥌 @oowm.org · 28/09/2026
Perhaps. But if a company's complaint is "we don't have enough customers" and their response is "so we will bar access to a segment of now-former customers", I can scratch my head in confusion on the Internet all I want. Even McDonald's has figured out that walk-up business is beneficial.
130
Wes Mills 🥌 @oowm.org · 28/09/2026
What I've heard from people I know who still go there, this is just Starbucks' final form: drive-thru caffeine in a region that lacks Dunkin' [Donuts]. Starbucks is like every other large business: would greatly prefer if we'd throw money in the window and leave, not asking for anything.
190
Wes Mills 🥌 @oowm.org · 28/09/2026
I am amused at how easy Starbucks makes boycotting them. Two locations I walk by semi-regularly now have signs up, “our cafe is closed but our drive-thru remains open”. Both signs “apologize for the inconvenience”. Cutting off people who didn’t drive seems unwise for a company that wants business.

Or do neither of those and have the comfortable experience of taking the train while being able to bring two gallons of soda if that's your thing and without being X-rayed. I've never flown between Seattle and Portland and never will as long as Cascades exists.

It would be nice if the process was only 45 minutes of screaming machinery. Living in MDUville as I do, it's multiple hours, every day of the week. I can hear one going right now. Plus they smell worse than a smoker who just lit up product from the worst shop on Capitol Hill.

(I'm trying to figure out why the platform we've switched to is sending emails only to Gmail dot com via the "high risk outbound" pool but emails to a domain hosted at Gmail but not gmail dot com go via the "regular outbound" pool. Seems to be a mystery! But they deliver so...whatever.)

I'm moving the email of an org I volunteer with over to a new hosted email system and looking through the myriad domains in here, I love all of my fellow nerds. There are a lot of Gmail dot com addresses, of course. But those of you with your own domains? Almost none are at Gmail! Endearing.

This is absolutely what many of my colleagues/coworkers are missing. You can't just type "gib minekrapht" into Agency and expect a blocky-textured game that's well-formed and interesting to fall out. It's like any other tool, you gotta know what you intend to happen to get there.

Five KBO teams would be leading the AL West by win percentage, two of them would be leading on outright wins and losses alone even though they've played 18 fewer games.

Only one NPB team (Fukuoka S. Hawks) would be winning the AL West but they have also played 20 fewer games to this point. By win percentage, six NPB teams would be leading the AL West. There are twelve NPB teams.

Three teams in the AAA Pacific Coast League and eight teams in the AAA International League would be leading the AL West if we had promotion and relegation like a proper sport.

Wes Mills 🥌 @oowm.org · 25/09/2026
No other MLB division has every single team with a negative run differential. All five AL West teams are negative and the *least bad* negative differential belongs to the Texas Rangers at -40.

Only twice in their history (1969, 52-110 and 1976, 55-107) did the Montréal Expos end a full-length season with a worse record than the worst team in the 2026 AL West. For nineteen seasons, the Expos would have won the AL West if they were in the ALW instead of Bud Selig Hell.
140
Wes Mills 🥌 @oowm.org · 25/09/2026
Only the NL West has a worst team (Colorado Rockies, 57-102) that is worse than our worst team (Anaheim Angels, 61-98).

Wes Mills 🥌 @oowm.org · 25/09/2026
Ten teams would be if you give two teams a one-game "would have played each other and one has to win" bonus. Those two teams are the Baltimore Orioles and the Miami Marlins, ffs.
120
Wes Mills 🥌 @oowm.org · 25/09/2026
In "honor" of the Mariners being eliminated, like should happen with the AL West: There are eight 2nd-place-and-below teams in the rest of baseball who would be winning the AL West if they were in the ALW instead of their actual divisions.

At my employer, free sodas, coffee, and tea is an office perk and I've offered one to every candidate I've interviewed in person. Multiple candidates have brought their own drinks and it so badly did not register with me that I couldn't tell you what any of those drinks were.

Generally, the only notarization I won't do is mortgages (compliance policies are way too annoying and your lender should be doing that) or certifying that an event has happened (hard for me to verify). Other than those, most likely!
