Female Bust in Red collections.artsmia.org/art/1421
head and upper torso of nude woman who looks down to PL in red
In Paris, where he moved in 1906 from his native Italy, Amedeo Modigliani stood out from the ebullient avant-garde with his mysterious, long-necked portraits—paintings of arresting solemnity. From 1911 to 1913, he explored stone sculpture, creating a series of geometric heads inspired by African masks. Poor health forced him to abandon the labor of direct carving, but the feel and gesture of sculpting resurfaced in Female Bust in Red, along with memories of a much earlier art. Here the forms are condensed into solid blocks, and the vigorous brushstrokes seem to mimic the chisel’s blows. The head bows with silent elegance in a modern echo of Gothic Sienese paintings depicting the Virgin Mary.

"Ivan Aivazovsky's 'The Shipwreck on Black Sea' masterfully captures the dramatic intensity of survival as a lifeboat faces the raging waves near a rocky coast under brooding skies. Famous for his seascapes, Aivazovsky uses light and shadow to create a dynamic interplay between the turbulent sea and the desperate struggle of the survivors."

Although Draisey considers himself a nudist, these paintings go beyond a simple celebration of being unclothed. Painting himself nude became a deeply personal way to explore his sexuality, gay identity and relationship with his own body. #gay #lgbtq+ #art #arte #nudist #nudista #nudiste #male #men

Yesterday afternoon's Little Purple Sketchbook No.1 drawing of what was on my mind, pardon the pun. After seeing multiple videos of trad-wives debating feminism, and Sean Duffy berating his daughter for getting into Harvard because it would destroy her morals, I had to sketch a little something.

“Wind on Mizuhiki grass” by Japanese artist Akiko Niikura
Titled Wind on Mizuhiki Grass, this luminous botanical painting by artist Akiko Niikura captures the fleeting, rhythmic motion of autumn wild flora swaying in an unseen breeze. The artwork focuses on Mizuhikisō (Persicaria filiformis), a cherished wild knotweed named for its uncanny resemblance to mizuhiki—the traditional red-and-white decorative paper cords used to bind ceremonial gifts and envelopes throughout Japan. Because its tiny, thread-like flower spikes appear bright crimson when viewed from above and pale from below, the plant has long occupied a poetic place in Japanese tea ceremony arrangements (chabana) and seasonal literature as a subtle harbinger of early autumn. Niikura translates this humble botanical subject into a lyrical study of movement, balancing spontaneous ink washes with profound sensitivity to natural form.

Technically, the painting exemplifies classic ink-wash and Nihonga sensibilities, relying on fluid, wet-on-wet pigment pooling techniques reminiscent of traditional tarashikomi. The broad leaves of the plant are rendered in layered washes of deep forest green, sepia, and warm burnt umber, allowing water and ink to bleed naturally across the paper surface to suggest the weathered, mottled texture of late-season foliage. Rising from these weightier leaves are long, arching stems executed with decisive, calligraphic confidence. Along these delicate stalks, Niikura applies fine, scattered flecks of vermilion pigment, capturing the tiny flowering nodes that bend and yield to the wind's invisible push.

Compositionally, the piece relies heavily on the aesthetic principle of yobaku—the deliberate use of unpainted negative space. Set against an unblemished, warm cream ground, the asymmetrical arrangement allows the viewer to sense the vast atmospheric space surrounding the plant.
