I'm having a rough time with diabetes distress and general disability burnout, and the NHS hasn't the faintest idea what to do with autistics (I'm not officially disgnosed) when it comes to either mental health or diabetes. Does anyone know where I could get some advocacy? @oolong.co.uk, any ideas?

iirc the really scary statistics are about who paid for recession. normally the poorest do; in the 1970s it was the richest. that's the destruction we must never go back to

It's very important to Tories that people believe the 1970s were a disaster decade, because they were pretty much the only justification they ever had for the policy framework that's dominated the next 46 years. Here's a corrective from @redpeppermag.bsky.social www.redpepper.org.uk/political-pa...

Love how potted histories of the 1970s always seem to go an about high unemployment, but then you look at actual statistics and see that it doubled in the five years after the Tories took power in 1979 and took twenty years to come back down to its previous level www.ons.gov.uk/employmentan...

This KC has the batshit idea that you can win cases by retroactively applying guidance changes onto historical situations. So the NHS and the RCN must discriminate against trans women back then, because we have segregation today. That by not segregating and discriminating back then, they broke rules

This is what it comes down to every time someone ends up in court defending their transphobia. They say their beliefs and free speech are protected, and it turns out they've behaved abominably, in a way their beliefs absolutely don't require. Does anyone know an exception? rtie.org/trans-facts/...

HOPE IS NOT JUST A SLOGAN, IT NEEDS TO MEAN REAL CHANGE

ZACK POLANSKI
LEADER OF THE GREEN PARTY

"Unlike his predecessor, we have a PM who talks like he gets it. But sadly like his predecessor he isn’t prepared to break from the powerful and wealthy interests that have created an inequality, affordability and a climate crisis.

Hope is not just a slogan, it needs to mean real change. The speech today had no wealth taxes, no rent controls, no water nationalisation and a strong hint of more North Sea drilling.

It is disappointing that we have a country ready to break from the last 40 years, a Labour government with the majority to do it, and yet what we see are more half measures, reannouncements and tinkering."

No, that's an asinine take. Are you a medical professional yourself? The measles vaccine, for example, leaves people with only about a 3% chance of a (far less serious) infection after two injections, and lasts for life. Compare and contrast.

Pointing out the genuine limitations of a vaccine (non-sterilising; only slightly preventative against Long COVID) isn't being "anti-vaxxer", it's being scientific. (I have had at least one COVID vaccine every year and continue to do so, but they aren't perfect)

There's nothing in that paper's abstract or conclusions that supports either part of that. Is there anything in the rest of the paper? Or do you have other evidence you'd like to share?

I would not be calling a vaccine 'extremely effective' unless it made it extremely unlikely that the recipient would catch the disease after receiving it, and practically ruled out the disease causing lasting disablement.

Oh it’s insane. Years ago I decided not to have regular tv in the house, my kids were little & they watched vhs shows from charity shop. I was hounded by the licensing people in a way that felt like harassment. Every few weeks another threatening letter.

Fergus Murray @oolong.co.uk · 29/09/2026
I've done it before and it does (or did) stop the letters for a while. Maybe three years? Maybe less. Slightly more effective than scrawling 'NO TV HERE, RETURN TO SENDER' on every letter and posting them back, as it turned out. 😤

Fergus Murray @oolong.co.uk · 29/09/2026
Insanely, the things you need to declare to satisfy them you don't need a licence (for now) include "No one in my household watches or records TV programmes live on foreign channels, via satellite or online streaming." We don't, but wtf?

The tarantula wolf spider, then, is like the original penguins (great auk, extinct) and the original potatoes (sweet potato) in no longer being considered an example of the thing it originally gave its name to.

So the original tarantula is a true spider but not a true tarantula, apparently. #TaxonomyIsHard

Fergus Murray @oolong.co.uk · 29/09/2026
I've just learned that some authorities describe the group Araneomorphae as 'true spiders', as distinct from Mygalomorphae (presumably fake spiders) like tarantulas and trap-door spiders, which have downward-pointing fangs. Also, the original tarantulas are no longer part of the 'tarantula' group.
