Ohh, my dog. 🥺 #DogsOfBluesky
A little dog, snuggling under my arm in a ball, head against my dressing gown. My hand, cradling get back, looks almost as big as she is, making her look especially tiny (perspective is funny).

I haven't read this yet, but here it is with alt text.
Tomorrow, Green Party conference is due to debate a motion entitled 'Zionism is Racism'. I know this is a motion that has stirred really strong feelings for many members of our party.

As a party and as parliamentarians, we stand opposed to racism in all its forms. We have always been united in standing up for Palestinians and other oppressed peoples, in calling out the genocide in Gaza and other human rights violations in Israel and the occupied territories, in opposing the Israeli government's crimes of apartheid, calling for sanctions, boycotts and divestment, and much more beyond. I do not believe, though, that passing this motion would move us forward in this work. In fact, I worry that it could set us back. As such, I cannot support it as it has been written.

I am particularly concerned by the suggestion in this motion that the Green Party makes an explicit commitment to a particular constitutional outcome for the region. Our party has a long-standing commitment to the fundamental right to self-determination and therefore supports the right of Palestinians and Israelis to determine their own future. As a Green Parliamentarian I want to continue to push the government to advocate for the right to self-determination on the international stage. And while this motion focuses on Palestinian rights and doesn't change the party's policies outlining our more universal commitment, I am worried that this vital work will be undermined if the Green Party adopts a position in support of one particular outcome.

Further, I do not think that trying to pin down a definition for something that has been a point of contention among scholars for decades helps us in our efforts to support the people of Palestine or end the genocide.

[Text continues in next image][Text continued from previous image:]

If this motion passes as written, I am concerned that elected Greens will be forced to spend our time and energy debating and defending definitions, at the expense of focussing on the essential actions that only we can take to make things materially better for people in Palestine.

I also worry that the current wording risks alienating a significant proportion of Jewish people, including those who vehemently disagree with the Israeli government; support boycott, divestment and sanctions; and are strong advocates for Palestinian rights.

In this party, I know we are united in tackling the ongoing and enduring injustices in Gaza and across Palestine. I am proud of the Green Party's culture of robust political debate coupled with a drive to build positive consensus, so I am confident that it would be possible for us to come to a position and write a motion that addresses the concerns that I and others have raised, while strengthening our support for Palestinian liberation. Sadly, I do not think this motion is it.

All the trees planted on my local green last year are red-leaved varieties, but right now, for autumn, they're putting out fresh green leaves. Mostly-green, at least.
Greenish beech leaves with red veins, backlit by the sun.More of those beech leaves, but from this angle we can see that there's a lot of red in their colouration.Crabapple leaves - a mix of green, orange and bright red.

See? She's fine. Probably.
The dog has rolled over onto her back, raised a folded paw, and has a human hand on her (just out of frame).

Kifl is probably okay really.
Dog face, nestled into a red blanket and a blue throw. She looks a bit concerned, her nose pressed against the throttle, her visible eye looking off to one side and her moustache splayed out on the left (but tucked away on the right).

Kifl's game this evening mostly consists of staring at me sadly, maybe pawing my leg, until I point out that her carrot is *over there*. Then she pounces on it does a little victory dance, refuses to let me have it, and puts it down out of reach again, before repeating from the start.
A forlorn-looking terrier.Kifl holds her carrot toy well out of reach, standing in a defensive posture.

Quite pleased with this one, too! I feel like Bluesky is a bit of a weird place to post short-form video, maybe? Anyway, here it is (thanks to @scrappapertiger.bsky.social again). Enjoy! Or not. 🤷🏼‍♀️

A beautiful painted lady butterfly, this week. www.wildlifetrusts.org/wildlife-exp...
A butterfly on the ground with its wings spread.

As Wildlife Trusts put it, "The painted lady is mainly orange above, with black tips to the forewings that are adorned with white spots, and black spots on the hindwings and forewings. The small tortoiseshell is also orange with black spots, but has distinctive yellow spots on the forewings and blue spots along the wing margins."

Kifl has mixed feelings about meeting a giant version of herself.
Kifl - a smallish, dark-haired terrier - meets a Black Russian Terrier, about twice her height, who sniffs her ear while she looks the other way demurely, and raises one paw.

Had a home visit from our crow friend today. They must have noticed me opening the window to take pictures of the Edinburgh skyline, and come to check out what was going on. And whether I had any snacks handy.

Something tells me that William Heath wouldn't have approved of the state of Thames Water in 2026, either. This etching is from 1828.
An old colour etching, captioned "Monster Soup, Commonly Called Thames Water, being a correct representation of that precious stuff doled out to us."

A horrified woman is looking towards us, after looking through an eyepiece at a collection of terrifying tiny animals.

At the top, the print says "MICROCOSM dedicated to the London Water Companies, brought forth all monstrous, all prodigious things. Hydras, and Gorgons, and Chinese dire."

Trying to imagine what it must be like to live in a place where you see buildings in this kind of condition all the time. How many of us can really even conceive of that?
Ruined buildings, topped by burnt timbers and rusting girders.

These buildings were once much taller.

Google Maps (so far) still uses their own version of the Mercator projection. It makes sense at a local scale, but it's really extremely silly when you zoom right out. The example everyone uses is Greenland looking about the same size as Africa (which is 14× as big) but here's PART of Antarctica.
Google Maps screenshot on maximum zoom-out, which gives just enough space to fit Africa horizontally.Something like a sixth of Antarctica at the same magnification, filling maybe two thirds of the display.

Africa in the real world has a little over twice the area of Antarctica.

For some reason there's a street view of Caffè Nero at the bottom of this screenshot. I don't think that's actually in Antarctica.

Kifl still doesn't see our crow friend as being HER crow friend, I guess. Which is a shame, because it was following her the whole time my neighbour was walking her the other day! It's possible we should have warned him, but we didn't realise they'd decided whoever is walking Kifl will feed them.

I don't like living in a country that's held up as a prime example of the international anti-rights movement succeeding.
"The United Kingdom demonstrates how anti-rights politics can hollow out democratic societies from within. Sustained anti-gender campaigns by political actors, sections of the media and organized anti-rights groups backed by opaque transnational funding networks have undermined the human rights of trans people, weakened democratic norms and challenged the universality of human rights."

Kifl pulling her very best 'I can't believe you won't feed me ten minutes early, the injustice of this is breaking my heart' face
An impressively pathetic dog. Her eyes are tragic, her eyebrows incredulous. Her ears are careworn. Even her moustache has the same energy as a Victorian urchin with a walk-on part in an Oliver Twist adaptation.

Here's another excellent wall-fern, from a couple of weeks ago. Could be another male fern, or a broad buckler-fern (Dryopteris dilatata) or something else! Any pteridologists out there who could help me out?

Here's another urban fern. I'd been vaguely thinking of it as a bracken, but @inaturalist.bsky.social suggests 'male fern', Dryopteris filix-mas? I guess I'm not really very good at identifying ferns. Or keeping them alive, so far. Why are they so hardy in the wild, yet so fragile indoors?
Ferns growing at the bottom of an extremely rusty downpipe. Above it, another plant has dried out completely, and the moss above that has clearly seen better, wetter days, too.

A couple more photos, from Olly. The first one shows how awkward it was to get to the position in the previous photo...

Had a really nice climb today! Particularly chuffed with this fairly tricky route (rated V3-V5, for those who that means anything to - Alien Bloc has pretty loose colour coding!) I completed it, but I wasn't sure I would when this was taken! Thanks to @scrappapertiger.bsky.social for the photo.☺️
