Here's a look at the final collection of #LEGO ships I made for #Spaceshiptember this year. Limiting the scope to tabletop wargame minis helped me stay on track despite a number of distractions. I also liked keeping (mostly) within a budget—the total is under $73 for the complete set. #SST #SST26

Day 30: Homage. My inspiration for this one was the Khar-Kushan mothership from Homeworld 3. Here it's a carrier with a forward-facing launch bay. It's a few cents over its $4 budget, but I'm too pleased with the results to change it. And that's the red fleet done! #LEGO #Spaceshiptember #SST #SST26

Day 29: Lasers. Here's the last ship for the blue fleet, another $2 destroyer. I considered keeping the faction lower-tech, without any energy weapons. But this design emerged while working on the ship for day 24, and I liked it too much not to include it. #LEGO #Spaceshiptember #SST #SST26

Decided to take a crack at digitally coloring in another of Rob's fantastic ships, with shading and flat colors. I hadn't intended to give it a Gallian livery, but I didn't try all that hard to avoid it either. Anyway, go look at all of his other work.

Day 28: Repair. I considered a tender to accompany and support a combat fleet, but I think it would have been too big. So at my wife's suggestion I instead put some smaller ships repairing a larger, damaged one. Definitely getting burnt out now, but nearly there. #LEGO #Spaceshiptember #SST #SST26

Day 26: Scanners. I thought it'd be fun to use minifig accessories to make a couple of unmanned probes. The first is called a scanner tool, while the other is the classic Space gun/camera. Day 25: Missiles. This one started off way back on day 13, as an early draft of the carrier. It wasn't quite large enough for a capital ship, but was easily revised into a missile cruiser. Day 24: Blue. Naturally I'm using this for yet another ship in the blue and yellow fleet. For this one I built off the destroyer made for day 14, making a more symmetrical design but retaining the irregular coloration. A simple build, but effective enough. #LEGO #Spaceshiptember #SST #SST26

Day 23: Ruins. Wrecked ships floating in the void are perfect "terrain" for a tabletop wargame. For this batch, I didn't aim to make them match any existing designs, I just threw parts together to suggest broken, derelict hulls. The whole set of four is just $3. #LEGO #Spaceshiptember #SST #SST26

Day 22: Huge. This started off as the rejected draft from day 19 (Armored), but it was considerably smaller than the green fleet's carrier. I went through several iterations (at right), finding cheaper but larger parts to increase size but stay within budget. #LEGO #Spaceshiptember #SST #SST26

Day 21: Organic. I always struggle with this prompt, or ones like it. I find it challenging in this medium and at this scale to not just make yet another fish-like ship. Day 19: Armored. My first draft was too long and didn't look particularly heavy. I'm much more pleased with this shorter, bulkier build. But it's 10¢ cheaper than other cruisers; I just couldn't find a way to make it match in value without compromising the look! #LEGO #Spaceshiptember #SST #SST26

More progress on RX-124 Gundam TR-6 [Haze'n-thley II-Rah]. At this point the body is complete apart from the hands. Next up is the shoulder equipment including two beam cannons, then the two handheld long blade rifles. Fantastically tall and imposing for a HG kit, if a bit delicate of a build.

Day 18: Angular. I figured this suited the red fleet best, and I wanted to give it another $3 cruiser, this time with a torpedo launcher. I considered a 45° rotation of the sharp, angled pieces, but didn't want it to look too similar to day 15. I like the result. #LEGO #Spaceshiptember #SST #SST26

Day 17: Variant. Having replaced the build from day 4, I figured this was a good opportunity to repurpose the original hull. I adjusted the prow to better match later designs, differing slightly if the destroyer is armed with paired cannons or an energy weapon. #LEGO #Spaceshiptember #SST #SST26

Day 16: Green. I wasn't happy with my build for day 4; it just didn't look experimental enough. So I decided to redo it, and wound up with this $2 destroyer drone. It has a more delicate and unusual energy weapon, drawing power directly from the ship's engine. #LEGO #Spaceshiptember #SST #SST26

Day 15: Luxurious. Another $2 neutral ship. Rather than going for something ostentatious, I wanted the sleek elegance of a limousine combined with a hypercar. The result is a sort of Batmobile, and out of scale, but I love how the dark tan looks against black. #LEGO #Spaceshiptember #SST #SST26

Day 12: Slender/Thin. For this destroyer I used a plate w/ ring (4081b) to give it a long, thin energy weapon in its prow. Figuring out how to connect it to the rest of the hull took some doing, and it didn't look great until I added the generators and heat sinks. #LEGO #Spaceshiptember #SST #SST26

Day 11: Dropship. Another $2 neutral ship, this one a heavy lander for your fleet to escort. The underside has ablative armor for atmospheric reentry. Had a blast at #PAXWest with the best lineup of games in recent memory. A Tiny Wander, Brewhaha, Brigador Killers, Culdcept Begins, and Stepwell all stood out in particular. The artist's hub was a fantastic addition, too—we bought a ton of prints! I also met a rat in an alley for some string cheese.

Day 7: Mining. Another $2 neutral ship, not exclusive to any one faction. I could've made a static bit of terrain, but I thought it'd be fun to have an asteroid tug. I wasn't planning to do Spaceshiptember this year, but now that it's cooling down my brain thought up a fun way to keep it manageable. And it's just so uniquely "me" that I'm already obsessed with the idea. We'll see if I follow through, and whether I can use a similar approach for Mechatober.
