Miller favorably compared what Trump insiders privately call his “war on terror” against the US left to COINTELPRO, the FBI’s notorious campaign of surveillance and dirty tricks targeting Black civil rights and other civil society leaders
Privately, according to two people familiar with the matter, Miller has (favorably) compared the Trump administration’s actions on this to COINTELPRO, the notorious Cold War-era FBI surveillance programs that routinely violated fundamental constitutional protections. But it’s a little more than a year of his iteration of MAGA COINTELPRO, and Miller wants more – a lot more. The sources add he’s berated other senior government officials about why more left-wingers haven’t been arrested or criminally charged, and why it is taking so long to dismantle certain liberal nonprofits; Miller has told colleagues that it would be an “existential threat” to the Republican Party if the Trump era were to end without the obliteration of the political network connected to liberal billionaire George Soros.

In what world is a nine point spread “divided” @reuters.com? If Trump won an election by this much the media would call it a landslide.
Flock faces growing scrutiny from regulators, lawmakers, and privacy advocates, despite drawing strong investor interest among venture capitalists. A recent Reuters/Ipsos poll showed Americans are divided on whether Flock cameras are a good idea. Some 38% of the country supports the use of Flock cameras in their community, compared to 47% who oppose their use.

Is it really possible that a full 27 percent of Massachusetts voters work for the alcohol industry? Shocking.
But the two final questions on the ballot are bucking that trend. Sixty-one percent of likely voters said they would vote no on Question 8, which if approved would end legal sales of recreational marijuana and create civil penalties for possessing more than a small amount of recreational cannabis. Twenty-seven percent of respondents said they would vote yes.

“Part of your work is actually convincing your bosses that we might be objective about a lot of things, but democracy cannot be one of them,” she recently told a group of young reporters during a workshop sponsored by the National Association of Black Journalists. “When the Washington Post says ‘Democracy Dies in Darkness,’ it is taking a side and saying our job as journalists is the protection of democracy. So instead of framing these stories as about partisan politics and about racial politics, we have to frame them about democracy.”

Siri what’s a “limited hangout”?
According to Victor Marchetti, a former special assistant to the deputy director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), a limited hangout is "spy jargon for a favorite and frequently used gimmick of the clandestine professionals. When their veil of secrecy is shredded and they can no longer rely on a phony cover story to misinform the public, they resort to admitting—sometimes even volunteering—some of the truth while still managing to withhold the key and damaging facts in the case. The public, however, is usually so intrigued by the new information that it never thinks to pursue the matter further". While used by the CIA and other intelligence organizations, the tactic has become popularized in the corporate and political spheres.

Killing another 100 fishermen in the Caribbean and arresting some more drug dealers should take care of this. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/14/u...
Cychlorphine is one of an array of new, deadly drugs upending the illicit drug market and confounding cities that are only now beginning to get a handle on fentanyl. These novel drugs can be made by amateur chemists anywhere, and they are harder to trace, their effects on the human body harder to reverse.

Experts say cychlorphine is 10 times as potent as fentanyl. Test strips can detect fentanyl but not cychlorphine, and it can take numerous doses of Narcan to reverse the new drug’s effects, though most people carry only one or two doses at a time. It has shown up in Europe and the East Coast over the past couple of years, its presence spreading like tentacles.

this is my favorite part of the story. because of course Maggie Haberman's access to Donald Trump does nothing for the New York Times or its success with advertisers.
The mayor’s office says that it does not pay the influencers. Still, their proximity and access to a figure as popular as Mr. Mamdani can help increase their own social media following and, by extension, potentially put them in a position to attract paid content sponsorships from commercial brands. Some influencers said that when they feature Mr. Mamdani, the videos get more likes, and viewers watch longer.

I know you’re frustrated because your community no longer has safe drinking water and you can’t breathe the air without getting poisoned. But have you considered the upside? It’s way easier for people to scam you now. And your boss might replace you with a chatbot.
A senior OpenAI policy chief said the company needs to work harder to pitch data center construction to communities, POLITICO’s Tyler Katzenberger reports.

“If you think about the amazing work we're trying to do with AI … it's all incredible and it's inspiring,” OpenAI Vice President for Global Policy Ann O’Leary said during POLITICO's The California Agenda: Sacramento Summit Tuesday. “But when you have a data center in your backyard, it’s not inspiring you. With crowds milling around, Waymo’s driverless cars blocked intersections and choked traffic. Some drivers were stuck behind the electric robo-taxis for more than three hours. Several Waymos had to be towed after their batteries died in the gridlock. At least two drove over exploding fireworks, with one catching fire.Jonathan Morrison, the administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, also wrote in a July 8 letter that the agency had identified “a clear pattern” of autonomous vehicles interfering with police, firefighters and paramedics. “Emergency scenes are not rare or extreme ‘edge cases,’” he wrote.

Is it too much to ask that the “we will eradicate crime” company understand criminal law? I guess it is.
Flock showed The New York Times how its technology works. After logging into the system, users must acknowledge they cannot search for license plates related to “reproductive care” offenses in 17 states and Washington, D.C. (Those places have expressly prohibited those searches, though a Flock spokeswoman said officers could do searches related to abortions in states only where abortion is illegal.) There is a similar warning about nine states that prohibit searching their cameras for “immigration enforcement.”

Since then, Berulis has laid low. He filed a police report, included in the suit and viewed by WIRED, and had the car seen by a mechanic who, according to the report, found “that the driver-side front impact/airbag sensor had also been removed but noted that the remaining wires had been spliced together, completing the circuit in a manner that prevented the vehicle from detecting or logging the missing component, while also preventing the vehicle from activating its safety protocols, alerting the driver, or engaging limp mode.” The police report also indicates that fingerprints had been found on Berulis’ car. According to the police report, the case is now “inactive,” “due to the lack of any specific suspect information,” though the police’s intelligence unit was notified.

The District Attorneys are not in the system at all. Eight years after the Legislature ordered every agency linked, the offices that decide who enters the system have never been connected, and the state board that oversees the law reports "no plan or schedule" to add them, because connecting the prosecutors depends on upgrades to DAMION.

Uber is a bad company www.nytimes.com/2026/08/04/b...
The litigation has revealed a clear pattern: Uber’s lawyers scour women’s private communications, medical records, therapy notes and other sources for sensitive details, including other sexual assaults, childhood abuse and domestic violence. They grill the women about those issues, their sex lives and their behavior on the night of the incident.

In one case, Uber petitioned a judge to force a woman to turn over details about sexual abuse she experienced as a child by a family member and family friend. In another, Uber compelled a woman to undergo a psychiatric exam to investigate other sexual assaults she had reported. And in another, a lawyer for Uber asked a woman whether she had been wearing underwear on the night in question and if she had become “extra sexually active” after the Uber incident.

At trial, the company has put a spotlight on the women, their choices and their credibility. Uber’s lawyers have argued that the women’s past traumas or use of drugs or alcohol made them unreliable narrators. They have suggested that the women consented to the encounters, or that they never happened. And they have asserted that even if an assault occurred, something else was the true cause of her pain.

So interesting that the head of Flock says their mission is to end crime, but when confronted with evidence that police use his technology to stalk people, he waxes philosophical about the nature of man.

Some officers, however, have defended their personal searches as normal behavior for police. Coty Wayne Hall, an officer in Niceville, Florida, ran 192 inappropriate Flock searches, including to track a former romantic partner, according to an internal-affairs investigation. The woman, a fellow officer, told investigators he once texted her details about what she was wearing one day when she took her kids to the park.
Hall was fired, pleaded no contest to charges of computer-system misuse, stalking and battery, and was sentenced to probation. In an interview, he said it was unfair that he was being made “out to be some sort of monster.”
“Pretty much everybody uses that computer system” improperly in the department, he said, and “they don’t audit it [nearly] as much as they should.” Niceville Police Chief Mark Hayse said in a statement that the department’s Flock use was audited “and only one individual was found to be out of compliance.”

In Wisconsin, a police officer allegedly used Flock to check whether his ex-girlfriend had gone to an abortion clinic, according to a police affidavit for a case set for trial this month.
In Kansas, a police chief who tracked his ex through Flock sneaked up on her while she was intimate with another man, a state police certification body alleged, leading to his firing.
In Florida, a deputy speeding to stop a young actress he’d added to a watch list for a license-plate tool called Guardian nearly caused a head-on crash, according to a police report and video from his dashboard camera. The deputy was arrested in March, and his attorney declined to comment.
And in California, prosecutors said a former deputy, Alexander Vanny, used Flock as part of a months-long campaign of “stalking” and “humiliating” his former fiancée that also involved following her around town and installing a hidden camera in her roommate’s bathroom, according to a sentencing brief.

Flock is hiring a software developer to build "high-performance integration pipelines connecting Nightshift to Flock's massive data platform, and build the agentic framework that allows Nightshift to 'act' on behalf of investigators." @josephcox.bsky.social
We're hiring a Senior Software Engineer to drive the architectural evolution of Nightshift, a conversational agent that helps investigators surface critical evidence and close cases faster. You’ll lead the effort to build reliable backend systems that connect a conversational interface to a large, complex data platform.

You will design the orchestration backend that manages complex LLM interactions, develop high-performance integration pipelines connecting Nightshift to Flock's massive data platform, and build the agentic framework that allows Nightshift to "act" on behalf of investigators. This is a ground-floor opportunity to solve the reliability and scaling challenges of real-time investigative workflows. You’ll partner with ML engineers on agentic workflows and platform teams to design robust APIs that keep the system accurate and performant as we process billions of data points daily.
