I don’t think I’m ever going to get the appeal of pivoting to video for podcasts. I’ve been listening to podcasts for 20 years, and never once have I thought, my God, I need to SEE these people! I’m on a walk or doing the dishes, I don’t need video.

Anyway, a movie culture without the possibility of insane overpriced whiffs will be a less healthy movie culture, and I'll eat these words the day that I can say that David Ellison has taken at least three big creative gambles, but I'm not holding my breath. x

Friday evening reading: “Christopher Nolan remakes the Odyssey as an Anglo-American imperial fantasy” www.middleeasteye.net/opinion/chri...
Essay by Prof. Hamid Dabashi, “Christopher Nolan remakes the Odyssey as an Anglo-American imperial fantasy,” 14 Aug, 2026“They say Nolan's Odyssey is anti-war. I don't think so - and even if it were, it would be anti-war from the perspective of a nuclear-powered white-saviour fantasy. People around the globe do not like such fantasies, and find them entirely offensive.

Nolan's Odysseus has PTSD: having first come up with the idea, then built the Trojan Horse, then caused the slaughter of his enemies, he has nightmares recalling what he has done - which is exactly how his Oppenheimer worked.

First you cause and stage the mayhem and murder of fragile humanity at your mercy; then you go and make a film about the traumas of the mass murders you have inflicted upon the world.”

This nearly-shelved Looney Tunes feature keeps the visual and verbal gags rapid-fire while also hitting its marks as a character-based legal thriller. With giant wooden mallets.

After several days of this discourse I’m ready to call the sexism red card. It is perfectly fine to think her argument is bad or she should have written a different genre, but way too many people are treating a translator with a PhD like she’s not smart enough to analyze a movie.

I see that. But I think I’d like to see more analysis of where you see her being too personally connected to the material, particularly since many of her criticisms parallel those a few other film critics have made (e.g. Brody, Bastién) & they parallel criticisms many have seen in other Nolan films.
