I don't have all the answers, clearly, but I do know that a load bearing axis of ttrpg theory is Theatre Kid <--> Dice Goblin

I think about this interview with the distinguished philosopher Conan O'Brien a lot. I actually think this is a healthy way to live your life! www.nytimes.com/2019/01/14/a...
Is this how you want to go out, with a show that gets smaller and smaller until it’s gone?

Maybe that’s O.K. I think you have more of a problem with that than I do. [Laughs.] At this point in my career, I could go out with a grand, 21-gun salute, and climb into a rocket and the entire Supreme Court walks out and they jointly press a button, I’m shot up into the air and there’s an explosion and it’s orange and it spells, “Good night and God love.” In this culture? Two years later, it’s going to be, who’s Conan? This is going to sound grim, but eventually, all our graves go unattended.

You’re right, that does sound grim.

Sorry. Calvin Coolidge was a pretty popular president. I’ve been to his grave in Vermont. It has the presidential seal on it. Nobody was there. And by the way, I’m the only late-night host that has been to Calvin Coolidge’s grave. I think that’s what separates me from the other hosts.

I had a great conversation with Albert Brooks once. When I met him for the first time, I was kind of stammering. I said, you make movies, they live on forever. I just do these late-night shows, they get lost, they’re never seen again and who cares? And he looked at me and he said, [Albert Brooks voice] “What are you talking about? None of it matters.” None of it matters? “No, that’s the secret. In 1940, people said Clark Gable is the face of the 20th Century. Who [expletive] thinks about Clark Gable? It doesn’t matter. You’ll be forgotten. I’ll be forgotten. We’ll all be forgotten.” It’s so funny because you’d think that would depress me. I was walking on air after that.

HOR(NY/ROR)
PREPARATIONS
One player will take on the role of the Director, who will describe the world the characters inhabit as well as playing the monster and any
other people or things they encounter.
The rest of the players will take on the role of a character caught up in the web of the monster's design.

The players may all agree on an era in which the story will take place, or select one at random:

Eras
1- Hammer Horror History
2- Victorian Gothic
3- The Spooky 60's
4- Totally 80's
5- Modern Times
6- The Year 2000 (Future Type)

The players discuss what level of content they are comfortable with, from both a Horror and a Horny perspective, and agree on which saftey tools they will use.

The Director selects a Monster. The Director need not roll for its listed traits immediately, but may instead wait to discover them when the
narrative requires that information be known.
The monster's minions in particular should be left undecided until such a time as they may threaten the characters.

The rest of the players then create their characters as directed on the Player Rules cards.

Once they are finished doing so, the Director frames the first scene and the story begins.PLAYER RULES
Each player determines what their character's profession is, rolling below if inspiration is needed. Make your profession specific- if you roll
"Scholar" are you a clerk, a teacher, or a scientist?

Profession
1- Scholar
2- Service
3- Laborer
4- Traveler
5- Official
6- Idler

Decide how well off your character is, consider how you live, and what circles you mingle with. What is your manner of dress?

Decide what your personality is, or roll below.

Personality
1- Cheerful
2- Naive
3- Pompous
4- Amorous
5- Morose
6- Cynical

Give yourself a name. Look to the characters to your left and your right. You know both of them. How do you know each other? Make a note of
these bonds.

When you make a roll where your profession, personality, or bonds would aid you, roll an extra die and choose the result you want.PLAYER RULES
Each character has two attributes- Horny and Horror. Divide six points between them, putting at least two points in each.

When you do something where the outcome is uncertain, roll a die. If the result is less than or equal to your chosen approach, you have
succeeded. If you fail, something eerie will happen to you.

You will roll against your Horror when you investigate a situation, confront a threat, or face your fears.
You will roll against your Horny when you approach a situation by wandering about in your underthings, confessing your deepest
desires, or succumbing to temptation.

If a situation makes you feel tingly, breathless, or intrigued move one point from Horror to Horny.
If a situation makes you feel threatened, worried, or spooked move one point from Horny to Horror.

If your Horror reaches 6 you run screaming into the night, fall into a dead faint, or are taken by evil forces.
If your Horny reaches 6, you give in to unholy desires, become lost in your own hedonism, or give yourself freely to the monster.
In either case, another character may try to rescue you.

The story ends when the characters face the monster in a final confrontation, or when there is no one left to do so.DIRECTOR ADVICE
Keep things scary and sexy. This will give your characters more inspiration for what they want to do, as well as allow them to move their points around with abandon. Give terrors a frisson and
tinge menace into even into simple pleasures.

Try to let the players lead. Let them frame scenes, go off in directions you would never have even considered, get hyperfocused on the silken sad uncertain rustling of each purple curtain. Roll with it, and reward them for it.

That being said if things are starting to drag, make something happen! Roll on the monster's minions trait and have that come crashing
through the window, have someone scream off in the distance, the walls start dripping blood, etc.

How long should the story be? As long as it needs to be, all other things being equal. You're a creative individual, trust your instincts and move things towards a climax when it feels right or when everyone needs to go home in five minutes.

When is the monster defeated? When it seems like it should be. Maybe it even comes back for one last scare! Maybe this is even one of those
stories where the monster wins and everyone dies at the end. You'll know. Everyone will know.

In short, if you're playing this you already love horror and you know how it works. Do that.
If you're playing it for the other half, well you know how that works, too.
It's all cycles of tension and release.

Best possible feedback from the groupchat when I asked if the rules I wrote made sense: "Actually yes. I understood everything more plainly than most games we have played." (and from the guy who didn't play rpgs before he started playing with us to boot!)

Leave it to me to turn a "one page ttrpg" into five pages. Or maybe it's that field testing has shown these things are usually being read in a dimly lit room by people with failing eyesight that wasn't so great in the first place, ergo BIG FONTS!

A notion: subjective design We all know that no group plays the same game the same way as any other group from a rules standpoint, yet we spend all this effort trying to make our rules and terms unequivocally clear. Why not instead treat this as a feature?

Well, played some 5e and it sure was some D&D. Didn't manage to roll higher than a 9 all night, which was actually pretty great from a roleplaying perspective. Just would have been nice if the game itself reacted to my presence in any tangible way. All these complicated rules for binary results.

Adding a new player to the group -> other players must bring them up to speed, in character -> the characters have conspired to lie about, or at the very least omit, one important event. Is this just a mean trick to play, or cool storytelling?
