A fun experiment, tried spade-lang.org and made an Ethernet stack running GbE with UDP and ARP support. Nice (Rust) feeling for an HDL, might migrate to it from Amaranth :D Tested on a Colorlight 5A 75B, ECP5 25F. The stack is about 5k LUTs/4k FF, the rest debugging, UART and MDIO scanning.

As long as C semantics don't get in the way of what you want to implement (in the version you want to target) I think it's a great idea.

START DOING COMPUTER SCIENCE

* VARIABLES WERE SUPPOSED TO BE GIVEN NAMES
* YEARS OF PROGRAMMING yet STILL MORE TO CREATE
* Don't want to write code anyway? We have a field for you: It's called THEORY
* "Well typed programs don't go wrong." "Boolean satisfiability is NP-complete." "Every effectively calculable function is computable." — Statements dreamed up by the utterly inspired

LOOK at what computer scientists deserve your Respect for all this time, with all the circuits and computers we built for them
(This is REAL computer science, done by REAL computer scientists):

[photo of an FPGA] FPGAs

To whatever non-intrusive choice you make, I'd add a "Why should I care?" clickable link that introduces people to the concept of PDSes. Extremely easy to ignore for the archetypical grandma, but an invitation to anybody even remotely curious about the world around them.

There is a saying in Spanish, "ser más papista que el Papa", which perfectly embodies this phenomenon (with people at least). On the tech side, I'd say Plan 9 is more UNIX than UNIX, for example.

Anyway I don't want to start a fight, much less with you, so I won't pry further. Just, please, consider whether the quote/response pairs are really what you want to contribute to the discourse and whether you are really happy with them.

I haven't read the whole thing myself but just looking at your quote/response pairs I can already see you're not engaging with the ideas presented. I say this from a place of love, I have no affiliation with the other person but I've followed you for long enough to care.

Code where `unsafe` dominates is bad code (and probably just a careless C port). Code where `unsafe` is dogmatically avoided might not be as performant as possible in Rust by whatever metric you choose. Firmware code with little snippets here and there, thoroughly commented and abstracted awat is OK
010
José Miguel @omixann.me · 23/08/2026
Emphasis on "the language acknowledges it" and "demarcated": those two IMO clear a lot of misconceptions about unsafe Rust. i.e., `unsafe` is not bad, it's not Rust admitting defeat, but a conscious choice to make most code "obviously safe" while labeling code whose safety is manually upheld.

José Miguel @omixann.me · 23/08/2026
If you get back to it: safe Rust is an operating model where nothing you write can invoke UB. This model has its limits, the language acknowledges it, so it offers an alternative: demarcated code blocks where an extra "dangerous" set of operations is available.

>This argument — that “first sale rights” need to be enumerated12 — gets it exactly backwards. Copyright does not confer an unlimited, unbounded monopoly right; the monopoly rights are the artificial privileges that are specifically defined and enumerated in law in exchange for specific concessions.
