This is the current issue I'm running into GMing Draw Steel. Not only does it not provide a solution to this problem but there is a frustration in scope of rolls between its granular trad skill-test roots and pbta's rolls resolving scenes

Game design is still a skill which can be practiced/honed! However, that practice is not in discovering objective principles but in refining the application of subjective ones. Instead of designers being valued simply as experts, we consider what their personal expression achieves in our own context

This is in part the appeal of many roguelikes. You are free to throw your head at the wall until you can pull off that combo you've been gunning for. So maybe it's just a shorter game, getting 10 games of EDH-esc out in an evening gives everyone a chance to pop off. But idk if that satisfies me

So like what does the card game where denying your opponents identity is always rooted in a recognition of it look like? What do strategy games look like if we design them with this identity expression aspect pulled to the front?

Because having fun losing at EDH often means that you've still forced others at the table to contend with the identity you presented. The frustration comes when you are denied recognition as decks play past each other, lock each other out, or win at too quick of a rate for the speech acts to happen

Also thunkin about how EDH decks are a hope of an identity constructed being brought to the table to attempt to have it recognized. And I think so much frustration within the format isn't around balance but is actually around frustration of identity being denied

Thunkin about how abilities in many games are a sort of speech act declaring an identity and how the systems of the game itself can respond to affirm that identity, completing the cycle of making it real

Guess I’m not done. Here’s the OTHER thing that makes pbta moves different from normal pass/fail systems: they abstract different amounts of in-game time and activity. Binary systems abstract *moments.* Moves abstract *narrative beats.* These are VERY DIFFERENT THINGS.
