Any old thing you like sits amidst a network of you-things and that's what I think really matters. To tap into that place and express who YOU are is fucking liberating and to engage with others' authentic art is deeply moving to me bc it is an honest connection to someone else's soul

It felt constraining to cram that in under 300 characters! But Lodestar to Karamouska was a very honest approach to a setting booklet that isn't strictly bound to conventional structure of RPG material. I wanted to write a good book first that's just as good as game material.

It's a traveler's guide to Karamouska. It serves as a booklet which can be simply read for leisure but it can be used as a campaign setting. Features local accounts, rumors, items, myths, games, personalities, stories, neighborhoods and factions. Digital is PWYW and physical is on Exalted Funeral!

Indeed! This is Karamouska, a subterranean city from Omios Ures. It felt so right to draw it from darkness rather than to force darkness into light. www.matheusgraef.com/karamouska-pdf

...and that's why some fantasy really bores me nowadays. Why does everything need so much reasoning? Why can't the heart drive more of the execution? Some creators explain and rationalize so much of their "mysterious" world that they kill it in the process; and the lore becomes an autopsy.

There's just so much going on. I attribute at least some of the allure to the nonsensical vs. photorealism. I can't help but imagine they weren't thinking of function or realism when placing the gems & filligrees, they were just trying to make the most mystic, dangerous tome; aka going by heart.

As a kid, these covers were absolutely alluring. The gritty, over-engineered metalworks riddled with sinuous runes and bejeweled notches seemed to be everywhere in the 2000s. This unique aesthetic imprinted itself on my mind ever since and, today, still contributes/informs some of my own designs.

Agli-Gor: imp jester, friend to all, had but one talent in life: to get away with jokes that would (or should) get any other comedian killed.
digital painting of agli-gor: a very old imp with a thin, long white goatee, wearing a black jester outfit dotted with stars, the imp's whip-like tail is manning a sock puppet. the imp sits bored.

Sure... But I think many who interact with this stuff genuinely know, deep down, that they're polluting everyone's digital environment... and they just choose to do it anyway.

This is regarding that worthless opinion piece that everyone is losing their minds over. Folks, it's 2026. You should know most news websites use manipulative headlines to bait people. You quote tweet with indignation or a "clever" burn? Enjoy your "I've been baited" medal.

A reminder that you do not have to interact with every negative, idiotic take on the internet. In fact, you shouldn't. The less reactive you are, the better your life will be.

Do those who interact with idiocy not realize they partake in idiocy themselves? If something vexes them, they must immediately react to it like some unrestrained child? Fuckin baited into "one upping" a news outlet by a) giving them exposition b) being higher on a podium... of idiots.

Willing Subject
A dark room, lit by a single shaft of light from above. A man laying flat on a stone floor, next to him is a sorceress on her knees, dagger up in the air, an instant before she plummets the blade into his chest. The man stares at the viewer with a content expression. Next to the man's hand is a tipped over goblet.

illustration of death carrying a soul away to the afterlife. black background, theatre light over a fallen soldier with an arrow on his groin and head; he lays limp on the floor, his eyes vacant of life. death appears softly from the black, hovering up as she carries the same soldier as if he was weightless. the soldier has an expression of shock as he notices the skeletal hand of death clutching his nude body.

gnomish settlements are reclusive; concealed by powerful illusory magics. there, the small denizens scheme and toil incessantly on ways to locate and return to their utopic homeland. any gnome may leave, but they must first undergo a ritual where all memories of home are erased from their minds.
digital painting of a gnome walking into a sunsetting grassy field with a dog companion twice his size. the gnome wears a starry hat, hands clutched behind his back. he looks behind his back with a slightly melancholic stare, but his pose indicates sureness of his movement. the dog looks straight forwards.

Wake up babe, synopsis for OTTO NUMBER 9: a new adventure for OMIOS URES just dropped. As always, I'm having a lot of fun with the layout/illustration juxtapositions. Coming soon!
Page spread with a black and white illustration of a cablecart travelling up a wayline to an enormous tower with a bulbous rooftop in an enormous cavern. Text reads:

A NIGHT TO REMEMBER...

Welcome to Bugram Agar. The brightest star in the underground sky. One night here costs about as much as the average worker earns in a year, and this will soon be a night to remember.

A microcosm within a microcosm, Bugram Agar is the Karamouski crown jewel for game and opulence. The Hotel hosts the Opal Casino, thermal pools heated by fiends in captivity, a grand auditorium entertaining exclusive concerts and plays, a pleasure dungeon and, perhaps most importantly,

Utmost privacy.

The building perches alone on a reserved cliffside, away from all the buzz, low-lives and unexpected smells of the big city. A gilded cablecart, privately operated, fetches the richest of the rich to and from the nearest district of Portnova, way above the underground clouds, up into luxury nirvana. Please take your sick philter, enjoy the complimentary aphrodisiac and avoid looking down at the 300 meter tall fall.

Tonight, a great tragedy is set to take place. For the first time in centuries, a mythical, near-indestructible defense automaton named Otto Number 9 will be seen by the public eye, and more: it will be the centerpiece of Bugram Agar’s bi-annual, highly-anticipated Grand Auction.

But no one could predict the Machine would awaken from its thousand-year slumber.

It is now up to the Party to put a stop to Otto’s carnage, or simply make it out alive, all the while three tonnes of rogue metal rampage the carpeted halls of Bugram Agar.

I'm an official D&D/MTG illustrator working on a game that's p much a love letter to everything I like about RPGs. and more: it's pay-what-you-like. get OMIOS URES for free if you want, I don't care. spread the word, play the game once with your group and I guarantee they will want a campaign. :)
page of OMIOS URES. digital painting over graphite sketch of a chameleon hunter with a hand cannon. his prehensile tail is holding a torch behind him, and various items are strapped to his body. a bandolier with potions, a large bag with a bear trap sticking out, a fairy in a cage hanging from a rod. waterskin, pocket watch, sleeping bag, retro aviator-like goggles on his forehead. he walks hunched, as if sneaking about, and his delicate gait - exactly like a chameleon's - is a visual play, resembling the tippy toe walk of a cartoonish hunter

text says:

ITEMS ITEMS ITEMS

The following pages cover a number of ordinary (and extraordinary) miscellania favored by adventurers.

When employing an item’s Skill Check for a NPC, replace the skill with the NPC’s Body, Mind or Magic. An NPC trying to break out of manacles uses Body instead of Physique.

Traditionally, Carverine engrave their tusks with biographical glyphs and runes, so that their bones may tell stories of who they were in life. In more cosmopolitan settings, however, tusk engraving often serves less ritualistic, more decorative purpose, akin to some human tattoos.
sketch of a muscular carverine (orc-like humanoid) man sitting on a throne, while an older carverine, man, engraves one of his tusks. a pet boar watches the scene, the muscular carverine is petting it.
