The model of a very British coastal town; Penzance 1877. The Godfrey Edition maps have turned me into an unapologetic railway nut. The main reason for this can be seen in our text sample. This new technology spread so quickly, changing the way we all live our lives & where we live them! -Andrew.

In this work from 1912, Édouard Vuillard depicts his mother reading the morning newspaper, at one with her surroundings, it constitutes a demonstration of Stéphane Mallarmé's notion that 'one must express the effect something produces rather than the thing itself.'

Also included with this map is a detailed and engrossing list of local residents and their trades from around the time this map was first published, and an extract from Kelly’s Directory of West Yorkshire 1889. A wonderful step back in time!

I scanned a lot of my dad's old WW2 photos and had the chance to go through them with him and take notes on the when and where and other details of them, but I don't THINK the negatives themselves are anywhere to be found
Dad and his older brother Larry standing in front of the Cathedral of Our Lady in Antwerp in late February or early March of 1945. Larry was part pf a 9th AF AA battalion protecting Antwerp from buzz bombs and raids, and dad's bomb group was stationed just inside France at Denain/Prouvy, near Valenciennes. The wreckage of an ME-109 which was decorating the airfield at Laon-Athies in France when the 323rd Bomb Group took over in October of 1944.Dad, in captured German garb, being held "prisoner" at swordpoint by one of his tentmates, the semi-legendary Stanley C. Farr, who ended the war with an astounding 267 discharge points. Sgt. Farr flew 160 combat missions over five tours, earning seven battle stars and 32 air medals.Sometime in the spring of 1945, my father flew into Trier to help retrieve a B-26 Marauder which had made an emergency landing at the airfield there. At the same time, an 8th Air Force crew was there rescuing a similarly stranded B-17.

During some down time that day, he took the opportunity to do some "ground truth" damage assessment (i.e., "sightseeing") in the recently-captured city of Trier, which had been one of his Bomb Group's targets not that long before.

There's no way of knowing, of course, whether this particular building on Saarstraße was damaged by his bombs, those of some other Bomb Group on some other mission, or even by artillery, I suppose.

By universal law, any building bombed into cutaway view must have a clawfoot bathtub perched precariously on the edge of the destruction, and this one is no exception.

Thank you. I have considered this as his story is remarkable and well documented. Here’s his humorous 2 cents on sleeping in the same tent as Hemingway. No one in my family had any idea until I read these letters in 2015. If you know of a publisher who might be interested, I’d love to know!

My grandfather was a civilian photographer in WWII. I discovered a box of his letters he wrote to my grandmother that she saved immaculately. I was floored! One letter was written about V-E Day and photographing Hermann Goring and the other about photographing the liberation of Dachau.

During WW2, Olga Lehmann's decorative murals enlivened the dour interiors of the nationwide chain of state-run 'British restaurants,' requisitioned hotels, the ministry of aircraft production and the government censorship department in Holborn. This work is from 1940.

Corot Study, Island Lake. One of a group of landscapes that begin with Corot—not as subject, but as a point of departure. I’m interested in what happens when that history of landscape painting is pulled apart, layered, and rebuilt through my own experience of place.

Leeds. Morning. January 2026. Down by the market.
A wavy lined black and white pedestrian area with grand ornate red brick and sandstone buildings. All very smart beneath a crisp winter sky. A woman walks towards a big pink Churros cabin. It’s all amber sunlight and blue shadows.

That pedestrian area is treacherous when it has been raining or it’s covered in still wet Saturday night sick.

Leeds. January 2026.
The large edifice of a brick built telephone exchange sits adjacent to the smooth reflective grey of a shiny tarmac road. On the right are fences and red and white plastic barriers, laid for pending building work. Above, blue works its way into white at the horizon where the sky is interrupted by a newly built block of flats.

'Road to the Farm.' (1944) I find it difficult to think of any British landscape painter of Rowland Hilder's generation (he was born in 1905) whose work is as widely known but whose name is not. His work touched a strain of nostalgia for an unchanged and unchanging landscape.

Hayle. Oct 2015. 7am-ish.
Mudflats and water reflect the dark pink and purple brown of a sky that runs, left to right. It goes from fluffy scumbles of cloud towards a pale blue and golden clarity.

Between, across not quite the middle a black felt line crosses, marking out the silhouettes of trees and buildings you cannot see.

Lelant. Cornwall. 2015.
A harbour scene with early morning amber coloured light, over grey clouds broken in front of pale blue. In the distance a line of low trees and a church.

Hayle 2020.
Blue water and blue sky banded from left to right by a strip of random buildings, sand and scrub.

A solitary point of cloud hangs, stranded, like punctuation in an empty sentence. .

Reginald Brill had an indefatigable interest in the everyday lives of people, and they're often captured off-guard as in this work of an orange seller at Sudbury, Suffolk from around the mid-1950s.

Is that photo taken quite near Lelant Salting? We moved down about 23 years ago. Although I did spend the last ten or more years shuttling back and forth to Leeds every six weeks to look after my mum. Most of these journeys were on trains not much more comfortable than the one in the photo. 😂
