Maybe it seems weird that AI bosses won't stop rending their garments about the terrible potential of their bots, from the jobspocalypse that'll ensue when AI does our jobs, to the impending moment when the word-guessing programs learn too many words, wake up and turn us into paperclips. 1/

Austin’s Surge of New Housing Construction Drove Down Rents
After decades of explosive growth, Austin, Texas, in the 2010s was a victim of its own success. Lured by high-tech jobs and the city’s hip reputation, too many people were competing for too few homes....

it’s kind of annoying how we have dozens and dozens of studies showing building more housing puts downwards pressure on rents, but once a year a small cadre of crank economists publishes a shoddily-researched paper to try and muddy the waters and for some reason, papers like Hell Gate take the bait

It is the anniversary of the My Lai massacre today. I'd say that even more than most years, it's important to remember what happened. And the role Hugh Thompson, an active serviceman, played in both stopping and publicising it. Despite enormous military, political and public pressure to stay quiet.

on the david foster wallace porn convention essay flaminghydra.com/issue-507/#o...
His narrative voice here, as it often is, was snide, funny, and brutally uptight. Some people could stand to remove the stick from their ass; in this essay, Wallace’s stick seems to be holding both ass and man together. Whether he’s exaggeratedly horrified by a porn star’s fake tits, or by the very sound of the phrase “prolapsed sphincter,” one senses that the horror is the only thing connecting him to the earth at this awards show. Most people are capable of getting through a few hours of cheap buffet egg rolls and Lycra stripper gowns with a lot less hand-wringing than this. His framework for the whole essay is a data point indicating that a couple dozen men self-castrate every year in order to free themselves from the terrible burden of their sexual urges. Don’t self-castrate, Wallace urges; if you watch as much porn as I did to write this piece, your balls will tap out of their own volition. Har, har. Ho, ho.And yet for all that, the essay remains a pleasure to read, as long as you’re able to suspend your desire to see sex workers written about as if they’re just as human as decorated novelists. It’s a veritable candy dish of descriptive treats: the “artilleryesque ejaculations” of one porn star, the “platinum lamé gowns slit all the way to the tenth rib,” the way Screw magazine scamp Al Goldstein is “less conducted than borne back to his seat” after a rousing speech. Wallace has a particular talent for describing the Leg Avenue-type costumes sex workers buy for a discount at adult stores. His accounting of the “seriously dolled up” stars as they enter the awards show is like something out of Edith Wharton: all those tensions, and all those outfits.

More lawless slaughter at sea by the Trump administration under the specious guise of counterterrorism. Fake counterterrorism. Make believe armed conflict. Real killing.
On Feb. 20, at the direction of #SOUTHCOM commander Gen. Francis L. Donovan, Joint Task Force Southern Spear conducted a lethal kinetic strike on a vessel operated by Designated Terrorist Organizations. Intelligence confirmed the vessel was transiting along known narco-trafficking routes in the Eastern Pacific and was engaged in narco-trafficking operations. Three male narco-terrorists were killed during this action. No U.S. military forces were harmed.
