When it's not online and you break down talking to a friend or therapist, it's hard but it stops eventually. Online, there's a vicious cycle of spiralling deeper and deeper, fed entirely by contradictory feedback loops from tons of strangers, and the human instinct to double down under pressure

what makes me genuinely sad about social networks is watching terminally-online people spiraling on their micro-blogging plateform (twitter, bsky, masto). At least before twitter and mass-media, we could have a mental breakdown that would only end up as a memorable story for a handful of people

You're making an interesting point I never thought about, I checked Theater of the Oppressed, and it looks inspired by the Pedagogy of the Opressed, so it relies on some form of interaction. It's doable with theater and teaching but I can't really figure out how it'd work with fiction writing

Well I'm not a professional translator, but I do translate my own short stories, and I have to say the part I enjoy the most is the first translation draft. And it's the part AI wants to fill, so f*ck no I'm not using AI to let it suck all my fun and leave me with a bunch of tedious chores

my college kid was heartbroken when on the first day of class the professor said "I used to spend 3 weeks teaching this part, but just have AI create it for you and we'll skip it." Skipping the most creative part of the work. The part my kid most looked forward to.

I find it so condescending that I kind of miss the old french "hugs if consented" ("câlins si consentis") answer that was making the round a few years ago, even if I found it irritating too at the time.
