One answer that I don't often see cited is a more explicitly inclusive, or even multicultural approach to schooling in English cities from the 1980s onward. See, e.g., a summary of the recommendations of the 1985 Swann report, presented to then-Edu Sec Keith Joseph: education-uk.org/documents/sw...

It has some effect definitely. But from the 1970s-1990s there was a (large) inequality in attainment (see chart below) But there is also clear evidence of an improvement over time, from the 1990s-2010s, among a UK born population (indeed some children of UK born)

Imagine looking at this chart and thinking the 1990s were when the rot starting to set in, that we need to return to the 1980s or before when minorities did much worse at school

And hasn't always been true, as you know. I find this chart on 1990s-2000s attainment striking - and showsi how inequalities are not inevitable nor is ethnicity destiny. For most ethnic minority groups, gaps weren't closed until the 2010s, and they have now reversed (which does attract commentary)

Remembering Kelso Cochrane www.ourmigrationstory.org.uk/oms/murder-i...
Kelso Cochrane
Notting Hill, London, May 17, 1959, just after midnight. Having had his finger, which he had broken at work, re-plastered at the local hospital, Kelso Cochrane was walking home. He was quite near the house in which he shared a room with his partner Olivia, when a gang of white youths surrounded him. They called him many insulting names, punched, pushed, thumped and then stabbed him. When he collapsed they ran away.

Two black men walking nearby rushed over. A taxi stopped. Cochrane was picked up and put in the cab but by the time they reached the nearby hospital he had stopped breathing. Someone called a reporter at the Sunday Express and said ‘three white youths have stabbed a darkie named Cochrane’.

The below chart indicates just how strongly persistent absences drive attainment 40% of those with persistent absences attain at the expected standard, compared to around 84% of those with no absences 2.5% of those with persistent absences attain the higher standard, vs 22% w/no absences
chart copied from this link, which explains the findings in further detail: https://www.health.org.uk/resources-and-toolkits/data-tools/evidence-hub/relationship-between-school-absences-and-attainment

Do we think something more like the first or the second set of curves here is more desirable? Which do we think better affirms the economic value of HE in the labour market, and which better reflects the aim of parity of esteem between graduates and non-graduates?

Nobody wd defend the first pair of bell curves, where NO non-graduate earns more than any graduate, nor the second pair, where graduate & non-grad earnings overlap completely If we think parity of esteem is a goal, the q is how many grads can/shd earn less than non-grads wonkhe.com/blogs/a-grad...

From the point of view of the Windrush Generation, the 1971 IA represented the worst of both worlds: their citizenship status had fallen under attack and they remained in the UK only on a technicality, yet at the same time the untidiness and incompleteness of the 1971 IA meant that the desire to restrict immigration among public and politicians alike remained as strong as ever

TIL the views of a previous SSPX 'bishop'. Predicting a nuclear attack on the 2012 Olympics, Holocaust denial, women shouldn't wear shorts or go to university just for a start... I suppose 'controversial', while weak, is more accurate than 'traditionalist' en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard...

The decline (-39%) in the study of languages at universities over the past decade is very striking, at a time when enrolments have risen It has affected more popular languages like Spanish & French, & African & Asian languages too From an excellent @britishacademy.bsky.social tool linked in image

Free school meal eligibility over the past decade Today's children are tomorrow's students, and tomorrow's students will have much greater likelihood of living in poverty than those of today As David Kernohan says, this will have serious implications for higher education policy and practice
Graph showing rise in children eligible for free school meals. Around 14%, or 1 in 7 over 2015-18, rising to over 20% by 2020/21 and increasing further each year to 26.5% for 2025/26

A decline in the number of 18 year olds has major implications for the overall recruitment of students to university & also for *inequalities* in participation, as @dkernohan.bsky.social highlights in @wonkhe.bsky.social Between 2015-18, around 14% of children were eligible for FSM; now it's 26.5%
The regulatory environment needs to support participation growth, not obstruct it. If the two-thirds target is to mean anything against demographic headwinds, the OfS should be directed to prioritise access and participation outcomes, and ensure institutions are resourced appropriately to deal with the task of teaching an expanded population of students with less successful prior experiences of education.

Student maintenance needs to be addressed as an urgent barrier to participation. For many potential students, particularly those from lower-income households, the decision not to enter HE is driven not by tuition fees but by the impossibility of living costs. The maintenance system has been eroded by inflation and is now a binding constraint on participation. Targeted maintenance grants – as the government has begun to signal – should be introduced at scale, not as a marginal supplement.

There are definitely unequal returns for some groups However, if you compare, eg FSM graduates to FSM non graduates, the benefits are clear The FSM-nonFSM earnings gap is evident for all educational qualifications, suggesting wider structura class drivers of inequalities in the labour market?

Data clearly shows that on average it is better to attend higher education than not, if the metric is wages & employment. This includes free school meal pupils, only 30% of whom (20% of FSM boys) attend HE currently This is *average*; some will not see wage benefits taso.org.uk/libraryitem/...

Hobson Jobson silly autocorrect Anyway the entry for 'Apricot' mentions Romans, Greeks, Byzantines, Arabs, St Helena; Portuguese, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, and Frank (in Barbary) languages as well as the bazaars in Cyprus, the Cape, China &c So anyway food culture is global everywhere, obviously
