I went to a playoff game for a local (Swedish) hockey team, and fans unveiled a huge new banner that's the most European shit I've ever seen and also appears to have teleported to the rink directly from the 1970s

I should note that Albert Joseph Pénot is most famous for his absolutely iconic bat-woman painting, "La Femme Chauve-Souris" (~1890), which I also hope to diamond-paint at some point, because WOW.

To me, the most incredible aspect of this painting (Carl Bloch's "In a Roman Osteria," 1866) is how viscerally Bloch evokes the squirming discomfort of social rejection by people who are much cooler than you (and, in one case, probably gossiping about you despite the seeming napkin on her head?).

In this painting, three people--two women and one man--are sitting at a a small table, eating and drinking wine. They are all looking at you. The dude looks pissed that you dared to disturb them or even enter their proximity. The women look disdainful but amused, as if this is just fodder for more mean gossip about you, and one of them appears to have a napkin on her head?

My absolute favorite aspect of this painting ("The Siren," John William Waterhouse, 1900) is the shipwrecked sailor's expression: fascination mixed with dread and fear as he stares up at her. I also love the shine of his wet skin.

The painting shows rock formations in various shades of brown and green jutting out of the green-blue water. On one of those rocks sits a naked siren with long, dark red hair and a lyre (I think) in her hands as she looks down at a sailor in the water below her. He is shirtless, with a rope wound around his upper arm, with longish dark hair, an earring, and an indescribable look of dread and fascination as he looks back up at her.
