Oliver Levine @oliverlevine.bsky.social · 28/08/2026Also thanks to @margaretbrisbin.bsky.social for the wonderful seminar! Truly an amazing speaker. 010
Oliver Levine @oliverlevine.bsky.social · 28/08/2026Ahaha I typed it all up! Hopefully no real poets come across it because the meter would probably give them an aneurism. 100
Oliver Levine @oliverlevine.bsky.social · 28/08/2026If the cells aren't released, what's the solution for explaining symbiotic evolution? Is this organellogenesis? Or just a failed attempt at emesis? Or is the acantharia kidnapping, wrapping, sapping, and handicapping? [6/6] 110
Oliver Levine @oliverlevine.bsky.social · 28/08/2026Life moves on, but then again, We find an acantharian! It's a clade with trumpet cells, also seen by Johan Decelle. But this is a first: symbiosis! With acanthoplegma, pelagomonas. [5/6] 110
Oliver Levine @oliverlevine.bsky.social · 28/08/2026Since the symbionts can't be leaked, they get single cell RNA seq'd They downregulate production of DNA Cell cycle progression kept at bay Instead, in symbionts we find induction Of carbon fixation, protein production. The cause of cell cycle repression? Simple crowding and compression. [4/6] 110
Oliver Levine @oliverlevine.bsky.social · 28/08/2026The symbionts' intracellular homes Don't overlap with lysosomes If the symbionts aren't being digested, how does their lifespan stay arrested? [3/6] 110
Oliver Levine @oliverlevine.bsky.social · 28/08/2026Inhabited by phaeocystis In biogeographic mixes The literature says one type per cell But that's all their methods can ever tell The real diversity they hide: What's in the cell, and what's outside? [2/6] 120

Oliver Levine @oliverlevine.bsky.social · 28/08/2026For several genes, we see expression from stage to stage, reverse direction. From here, more questions raised... New genome dropped, and it's phased, And auto-allohexaploid I'm terrified and overjoyed [3/3] 000
Oliver Levine @oliverlevine.bsky.social · 28/08/2026But evidence for this is scant: How chloë moves from seed to plant! To answer, we'll try RNA seq But how to tell what is unique -- Hopefully Kraken will know What is the plant, and what's epichlo? [2/3] 100
Oliver Levine @oliverlevine.bsky.social · 28/08/2026Some plant fungi live in roots But epichloë live in shoots Tall fescue grows in good condition Through fungus vertical transmission It protects against drought, heat and pests And helps with photosynthesis! [1/3] 110

Oliver Levine @oliverlevine.bsky.social · 22/07/2025Ugh this is a bad idea. How will the Democrats shake their reputation as a party full of out-of-touch elitist political insiders? How about another nepo baby, but this one says the fuck word so he's cool. 000
Oliver Levine @oliverlevine.bsky.social · 17/07/2025Can someone explain to me how I managed to misplace a six foot ladder between Monday and today 000
Oliver Levine @oliverlevine.bsky.social · 16/07/2025Idk about economists but this is how my high school economics teacher used the phrase. (Yes he was a football coach, why do you ask?) 020
Oliver Levine @oliverlevine.bsky.social · 14/07/2025I'm an adult and most of these things are foreign to me lol. I guess you can be "kids these days" still at 25. 000
Oliver Levine @oliverlevine.bsky.social · 11/07/2025Hey being a child is no excuse for being unemployed. 000
Oliver Levine @oliverlevine.bsky.social · 08/07/2025I think most of us instantly click the video as soon as we see y'all's characteristic title font. Not sure I'd even notice if it was just lorem ipsum 150
Oliver Levine @oliverlevine.bsky.social · 08/07/2025Because she was bought in on the whole IQ thing, my high school biology teacher insisted that you *cannot* study for an IQ test, and that you would get the same score taking it as a toddler that you would get later in life. I was... skeptical of this assertion lol. 100
Oliver Levine @oliverlevine.bsky.social · 06/07/2025Y'all are meant to be (www.mta.info/fares-tolls/...), but I know from experience that the standards for who qualifies for accommodations doesn't always cover everyone who needs them, so you have my sympathy there.mta.infoIndividual Disability Exemption PlanVehicles enrolled in the Individual Disability Exemption Program (IDEP) are exempt from the Congestion Relief Zone toll. Oliver Levine @oliverlevine.bsky.social · 06/07/2025They are exempt from paying the fee, so I think it must be pretty great for them actually, better traffic. 210
Oliver Levine @oliverlevine.bsky.social · 30/06/2025Is there an exchange policy on bodies? The whole hypermobility thing sounded cool on paper but I've decided I'd like one that doesn't throw its shoulder out every time I play pickleball or something 010
Oliver Levine @oliverlevine.bsky.social · 30/06/2025Always a mistake trying to force weird microbes you found to fit cleanly into manmade categories of behavior haha. Although this just seems like an analogy that turned into something more during a game of telephone. 000
Reposted by Oliver LevineCarl T. Bergstrom @carlbergstrom.com · 25/06/2025A few months ago, Nature published how-to guide for using ChatGPT to write your peer reviews in 30 minutes. This is, of course, a horrible idea. Here’s my response with @jbakcoleman.bsky.social .nature.comAI, peer review and the human activity of scienceWhen researchers cede their scientific judgement to machines, we lose something important. 15589233
Oliver Levine @oliverlevine.bsky.social · 25/06/2025The "old guard" isn't literally referring to age, but tenure within the party. It's important to have some turnover so that fresh faces and ideas can revive the party which is very clearly in decline -- you can see it in their limp, "roll over and play dead" response to the current administration. 040
Oliver Levine @oliverlevine.bsky.social · 24/06/2025Ahh I remember my own version of this conversation. Then my parents wondered why they saw so very little of me during my teenage years. Luckily they turned it around after I reached adulthood, but they were just ignorant, they didn't have the contempt this parent has. 0170

Oliver Levine @oliverlevine.bsky.social · 21/06/2025Have you tested this in other organisms? I'm curious how the % of the genome that's repetitive (in addition to the length of the longest repetitive element) will affect this #. 100

Oliver Levine @oliverlevine.bsky.social · 24/05/2025Yeah. *Population genetics* is based in biological reality. Africans and Europeans have different ancestry. But *race* is a social construct. 030
Oliver Levine @oliverlevine.bsky.social · 24/05/2025Other countries' scientists are as brilliant, and most public policy is designed to sustain the existing scientific infrastructure... would take major shakeups for other countries to absorb big shocks like this. I think the more likely outcome is fewer scientists, not more scientists outside the US. 110
Oliver Levine @oliverlevine.bsky.social · 24/05/2025It's not that easy unfortunately. The US has a big economy and high % of GDP in science funds; we essentially have a plurality of the opportunities to work in science the world around, and I don't think other countries have enough vacant positions absorb all the scientists who want to leave. 110
Oliver Levine @oliverlevine.bsky.social · 21/05/2025Ah, I'm glad their budget won't be affected by our stupidity. They do important work. 020
Oliver Levine @oliverlevine.bsky.social · 14/05/2025The fan being *on* has not deterred these birds from trying to nest on it. Their solution? More nests. Suggestions? 😂 020
Oliver Levine @oliverlevine.bsky.social · 07/05/2025Which is only marginally helpful to the person who originally asked the question, and entirely unhelpful to people with tangentially similar issues who are finding the thread later haha. 000
Oliver Levine @oliverlevine.bsky.social · 07/05/2025Usually I learn by looking up other people's previous questions and seeing what people said. This works great for python, C++, etc., but for some reason R folks answer questions like "Your code is dumb, here's completely different code that actually works, bye" unaccompanied by any explanation 100
Oliver Levine @oliverlevine.bsky.social · 07/05/2025I recently had a scientist I respect very much tell me that knowledge is outdated now that we have chatgpt. And while I disagree lol, I will give him one thing. Chatgpt is way more helpful for R code than any human person who has ever known R. 😂 110

Oliver Levine @oliverlevine.bsky.social · 04/05/2025Assuming you're not interacting with it regularly, I figure someone who has encountered the word once or twice (but doesn't use it regularly) probably wouldn't make that connection unless you referred to it in a way that gave additional context clues, like "on the lettering, the kerning sucks." 010
Oliver Levine @oliverlevine.bsky.social · 04/05/2025It's not really an academic thing, it's more of a media sphere thing right? I figure most people who've heard the word kerning and would immediately understand it in this context, are people who read similar news sources to you. Like I recognized it immediately but I didn't know the word a week ago. 110
Oliver Levine @oliverlevine.bsky.social · 01/05/2025Honestly whatever random citizen asked him this question should primary him. They'd honestly probably have a great narrative for their campaign. 000
Oliver Levine @oliverlevine.bsky.social · 30/04/2025Or maybe they *were* correct but then he said it afterwards 😂 210

Oliver Levine @oliverlevine.bsky.social · 21/04/2025Pretty wide gap between "measurably useful" and "end of disease" haha. But yes, definitely extremely useful, even if it was incomplete & is now outdated. 010
