#WeekMforMachinery #AlphabetChallenge Another very different snow plow locomotive at the Lake Superior Railroad Museum in Duluth, Minnesota. Isrm.org #PhotographersUnited See #ALTtxt for image descriptions.
Russel Wedge Plow # 19

A long wedge like snow blade is the entire front of the locomotive. The metal blade is painted black while the rest of the snow plow and engine is painted brown.Museum Sign Text:

Russel Wedge Plow # 19

If a railroad wasn't running it wasn't earning any money, therefore railroad companies wanted to find ways to operate all year round. There was only one problem, North American winters can pile on the snow, especially in the western plains and mountain regions. Often, these areas were remote and consisted of hundreds of miles of distance, way too much snow to move by hand. The first invention was to attach a type of shovel to the front of a locomotive, with only a few feet of snow a train could usually just push it out of the way. However, when the drifts got taller and deeper, a larger snow shovel was needed.

That is where the wedge plow comes in. Several versions of the design began appearing in the 1840's, but the most popular design was the one patented by the J.H. and J.W. Russell, who started the Russell Car and Snow-Plow Company in Boston in 1893. They made several different models, but what made their design popular was the solid oak beams they would place behind the wedge frames, which allowed Russell plows to cut through snow going 35 mph and move a drift up to 14 feet tall.

A wedge plow functions by being attached to a consist of one or more locomotives, depending on how much motive power is needed. A pilot is in the wedge plow to signal the locomotives to begin pushing, stop, or pull back. The locomotives would have to work in tandem otherwise derailments could be catastrophic. Essentially, the locomotives would build up speed for the plow and then continue pushing it through the snow until they could make no more forward motion. Then the entire consist would back up far enough to get enough speed and then do it all over again and again until the track was clear. It was a very dangerous and time consuming process.

Northern Pacific No. 2 Steam Powered Rotary Snow Plow

Used originally in the Cascades, the plow was sent eastward to less rigorous duties in Minnesota when larger and more powerful equipment took over in the mountains.

Constructed by the Cooke Locomotive Works in 1887, this plow is the oldest of its type in existence.

Me and my parents got back last night from an 11 day road trip. Instead of going south to New Mexico we went North through Wyoming, South Dakota, North Dakota, Minnesota and Ontario, Canada. Being out of the USA and in Canada for a few hours to see Fort William was very nice.
Photo of train cars on a railroad with wind turbines and a pink sunset. Different layers of grey clouds mix with the pink.

Taken on I25 in Wyoming last night.Heat map showing the locations of my cell phone photos over time in Google Photos. The pink in the upper states and Ontario, Canada is new, the other stuff is closer to home over many years.

The heat map doesn't include my many travels over the years with a regular camera.

Last night's first peep of the Moon rising over the lower slope of Mount Hood with the silhouettes of two lift buildings for the ski runs! And some of Portland's infamous crows flapping through. The already eclipsed portion of the Moon is still below the mountain's edge. #LunarEclipse #Portland #📷 🧪
A close up a portion of the Moon rising over the edge of a distant mountainside (Mount Hood), all just below center of the image. The Moon looks like a dome with a slanted base. The color of the Moon is a soft pale gold with some of its surface features appearing a darker pale blue.
Along the mountainside's edge are the silhouettes of two small buildings. Those are ski lift buildings serving the middle and upper ski runs. The mountainside and the silhouetted buildings are a dark blue. The slope of the mountainside runs from a silhouetted tree at middle left, toward another dark foreground tree at lower right. Some other dark foreground trees are also visible along the bottom of the image.
The sky above the moon and mountain is a pale dark blue.
Scattered around the lower part of the image are some small silhouettes of crows flying by in the foreground.

Regarding tonight's Partial Lunar Eclipse, when the Moon rises here in #Portland at about 8pm, it will look about like this. This is early in the eclipse. And it will probably be blocked by clouds low on the horizon. So don't sweat it! 1/2 🧵
A simulated (not AI) image of the Moon as it is beginning to become eclipsed by the Earth. A part of the moon on it's lower left shows a shaded gently curved shadow as it begins passing within part of the Earth's shadow. This image represents what the eclipse will look like on 8-27-26 at about 8pm from Portland, OR.

#BlueSkyArtShow #Chaos Two soccer balls, two trekking poles and a paper road atlas or two leaning against a tree. There was no car parked at the curb nearby or people making this a pretty odd thing to come upon. #PhotographersUnited #ALTtxt
Two soccer balls, two trekking poles and a paper road atlas or two leaning against a tree. This stuff was just out in the verge between sidewalk and street in a random pile. Mulch has been landscaped around the tree. Green grass is in the background as is the concrete curb and black asphalt street.
