I am so excited about this: We are doing a new kind of project with the aim of transporting knowledge and methods from the humanities into a natural science context. We'll have 5 full 3yr postdoc positions! I will post more in the coming week. But here is a preview: hifmb.de/institute/hi...

Mind the gap! Next stop: Biodiversity Theory Our working group just digitized our research landscape using a classic London Tube map design. Every line is a team member; every station is a core topic or application we tackle. Check it out and see where our work interconnects!
Map in the style of the London tube map on a light beige background. The map is surrounded by a blue border. The map shows a network of twelve lines in different colours. Each line represents one of our group members. Each station is a topic or application we are working on. The background is partitioned in different zones similar to fee zones. The zones are Mathematical and Physical Foundations in the middle, surrounded by Complexity Science and Network Science, surrounded by the applications in the ecophere and technosphere. In the bottom left cornor is a box with a black border that has the references for the line colours and the corresponding names of each group member. On the bottom right is a logo with a red circle with a blue, horizontal bar. On the bar is the text "Biond Lab". Right next to it is the text "Theory for Biodiversity. Every model matters."
Table with each station name in alphabetical order. For each station or topic we are working on is a list with the initials of the group member you can reach out to. Unfortunately, the list is too long to post it here in the alt text, but if you have questions and want to reach out, the DMs are open.
Check out the map below to see how our ideas interconnect!

To all the artists out there that are interested in art-science collabs. I am absolutely biased here, but here's a great opportunity to work with a wonderful team at our institute 😀 #sciart

I am very happy (and anxious) to share with you our most recent work in which we evaluated four of the most popular long-read assemblers, www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1... and tell you just a little bit about it in the following 🧵
biorxiv.org
Assemblies of long-read metagenomes suffer from diverse errors
Genomes from metagenomes have revolutionised our understanding of microbial diversity, ecology, and evolution, propelling advances in basic science, biomedicine, and biotechnology. Assembly algorithms...

What's the best way to top off a great week? For us, it was celebrating Pedro Carrasco's successful PhD defense last Thursday. His research explored how diffusion maps can aid in computing functional biodiversity from long-term time series. Congratulations, Pedro! We are all incredibly proud of you!
Four photos taken at the PhD defense of Pedro Carrasco. The first one shows him in front of the title page of his defense talk with the title "Computation of functional biodiversity from long-term monitoring time series". Underneath, we see him standing in front of his committee, ready to take on their questions. In the next picture we see a happy, smiling Pedro toasting with his colleagues and glasses of sparkling wine (we only see the hands and glasses of the colleagues). The last picture shows how he gets his doctor hat put on his head. In Germany it is tradition that the friends and colleagues craft the hat and put things on it that relate to the PhD's work and time in the institute as a reminder of things they experienced together. His head features references to diversity in fish and plankton communities as well as some results from his diffusion maps.
