Had the chance to meet some of them two months ago. Lovely team and seems like an absolutely amazing place to work. So, if someone's searching for a TT position and is interested in marine eukaryotic adaptation, Vienna has one 👇

New study by Alexander Henoch (@ahenoch.bsky.social), a PhD student in our group @hifmb.de and @awi.de, shows what it takes to bring gene synteny into microbial pangenomes, and what we learn about the variability landscape of genomes when we do that. See the pre-print here: doi.org/10.64898/202...

So, how's your heatwave going? I was lucky enough that I could spend most of it in a hotel with AC. Today though, I'm back and have to deal with the build up heat in my attic apartment. 32.0°C! Searching for a postdoc position further north than Germany sounds better every single day.

One of the great things about being part of an interdisciplinary institute is the multitude of topics people are working on. On the downside, it can be hard to keep track of everything. So, our group was looking for a nice way to illustrate our part. I had a lot of fun preparing this map :)

Wanted to go somewhere in Siena today. Took a wrong turn, got lost, found this. Probably the happiest getting lost I ever experienced.
View at the old city center of Siena. In the distance you can see multiple layers of houses. You can see the cathedral and Torre del Mangia (a 102 m high tower) as prominent views in the skyline.

A picture of our group member Kate. A young woman is smiling at the camera in a close-up selfie. She is wearing a dark gray knitted beanie and a thick black scarf wrapped around her neck. Her dark brown hair is partially visible, with some strands catching the sunlight. The background is bright, with the sun shining behind her.

A photo of our group member Ole Müller. The picture shows a young man with short, wind blown hair, a beard, and sunglasses steering a sailboat in the open sea. He is wearing a black life vest over a dark gray T-shirt, black pants, and gloves with red accents. He stands confidently at the wheel, with one foot resting on the edge of the cockpit smiling slightly. The boat's deck is white, with ropes neatly arranged near the helm. The sky is partly cloudy, with patches of blue visible, and the sea is calm and has only small waves.

Our group member Tim Mauch, a young man with short, wind-blown blond-brown hair smiles at the camera while standing in front of a cityscape during sunset. He wears a black Patagonia t-shirt with a small logo and a graphic of a climber, along with a backpack. A pair of sunglasses hangs from his shirt. The background features a scenic view of a city with red-roofed buildings, white and pastel-colored facades, and a mix of modern and historic architecture. The sky is a mix of soft blue and warm golden hues, with scattered clouds illuminated by the setting sun.

I made these knitting patterns of the RV Sonne and hydrographic measuring station Spiekeroog for a little joke. I am now really tempted to try it for real, although I haven't knit anything in years 😅All it needs is a little adjustment for the measuring station and it'll be good to go...
A knitted pattern design featuring a white ship on a blue background. The vessel has detailed outlines, including a cabin, smokestack, and a lifeboat at the rear. It's intended to resemble the research vessel Sonne. The bottom section of the pattern includes decorative geometric motifs, resembling traditional Scandinavian designs, bordered by horizontal lines. The overall style mimics the texture of a knit sweater.A knitted pattern design depicting a white measuring station on a blue background. The station features a tall structure with small rectangular cutouts and pointed details at the top. It is positioned on the left side, connected to flowing waves that occupy the bottom of the design. The waves are represented with a textured, curving outline. The pattern is framed by horizontal knitted borders at the top and bottom, maintaining a traditional knitting style.

What's the best way to top off a great week? For us, it was celebrating Pedro Carrasco's successful PhD defense last Thursday. His research explored how diffusion maps can aid in computing functional biodiversity from long-term time series. Congratulations, Pedro! We are all incredibly proud of you!
Four photos taken at the PhD defense of Pedro Carrasco. The first one shows him in front of the title page of his defense talk with the title "Computation of functional biodiversity from long-term monitoring time series". Underneath, we see him standing in front of his committee, ready to take on their questions. In the next picture we see a happy, smiling Pedro toasting with his colleagues and glasses of sparkling wine (we only see the hands and glasses of the colleagues). The last picture shows how he gets his doctor hat put on his head. In Germany it is tradition that the friends and colleagues craft the hat and put things on it that relate to the PhD's work and time in the institute as a reminder of things they experienced together. His head features references to diversity in fish and plankton communities as well as some results from his diffusion maps.

Have been thinking a lot about art and science communication lately and ways to incorporate data into pictures. Ended up with this one. It's not just the climate stripes but I managed to get some Arctic sea ice minimum extent in as well ^^
Picture of a polar bear going through an icy landscape. The polar bear is just a silhouette with the climate stripes overlayed to it (they change from blue to red based on the average temperature over the years, with more colder, blue years in the past, and an increasing number of hot, warm years for the last couple of years).
The polar bear silhouette gets thinner the warmer the years with the bones and skull showing the hotter the years get.
The background and foreground represent ice and snow. The form is modeled after the data for the minimum extent of Arctic sea ice. The background is the curve for the 1 to 2 year old ice. The foreground uses the curve for the ice that is older than 4 years.
