Gunvein's tutorial tell you to look at the spaces rather than your ship. This might have been the best advice I have ever gotten in shmups. It's like I'm seeing the whole genre differently.

Yeah, I'd agree with that. I rarely have the motivation to play through games multiple times unless they're absolute classics. I loved Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound, but I'm not sure I want to play through again on Hard mode...I should've started on Hard mode.
