overall I think I have a pretty decent sense of humor but now and then there is something I just find disproportionately funny compared to everybody else, and this is one of those things
a double door on a exterior brick carriage house that is falling off its hinges and haphazardly boarded shut with boards at anglesthe same double door in even worse shape but sloppily painted reddish brown

On my morning walk every year I pass by this quince tree and gradually there are more and more quinces on the ground and I am a very tired person but those quinces weigh on my conscience tbh

I am really fascinated by the psychology of the buy nothing group no-shows. The no-showing/no reply is weird enough to me but then when I give the item to someone else, several of these people who ghosted me with no replies will claim they were “on their way“. What is in it for them?

I have an ever-growing waitlist for the tours which makes me wish I had a better way of managing an "events only" email list for people who dont want to receive the essays. But these things are all way more complicated than they should be

the amount of long-put off cleaning and home repair stuff we magically have the energy to do today makes me wonder what life would really be like with 3 day weekends. Like... so much dust and decay that we just live with would not be part of our daily reality!

The parents who cared about this already policed their own kids' access to books. The problem they had was they couldn't stop someone else's kids from reading whatever they wanted. So they went to the government and lobbied to get these laws passed so they could stop *your kid* from reading books.

this is horrible on many levels but I'm imagining me being 15-17 and subjected to this and I am losing my mind. My parents also would have been so pissed off if they had to check out all my library books for me!

I posted this photo that my grandfather took to one of the less-gross local history fb groups, with a caption clearly stating that its the Block, and yet people keep replying to it telling me where it is like its a quiz? Its incredible how people have been trained to mindlessly engage with anything.

In my latest post I made "peach mango pickles" in which the peaches are the mangoes. Because "mango" means "stuffed pickle". Except sometimes, in some places, it means "bell pepper" and I wrote about that too. oldlineplate.com/peach-mango-pickles/

i'll be traveling this week so I actually looked up to see if there were any precautions to avoid cyclospora at restaurants and everything says "avoid drinking water that may be contaminated with feces." .... is there anyone who was not doing this?

happy Friday, the world is deeply unsatisfying so here's my satisfying thing of the week from the wikipedia entry of Amanda America Dickson, a mixed-race heiress whose white father left his estate to her in 1885. His white relatives appealed the will again and again and:
On July 6, 1885, probate judge R. H. Lewis ruled in favor of the will.  In November 1885, the trial in the Superior Court of Hancock County began, with the eventual ruling siding with Amanda America Dickson and her two sons. Then, in March 1886, the white relatives filed their appeal with the Supreme Court of Georgia. On October 11, 1886, chief justice James Jackson, and associate justices Samuel Hall and Mark Blanford heard the case following the appeal.  James Jackson expressed his firm conviction against upholding the will, saying, "I would rather die in my place than uphold the will." A few days later, he became ill with pneumonia and diedAmanda America Dickson, a mixed race heiress in late 1800s garb standing next to chair in front of tropical scene painting

i have to admit I've gotten a little bored with essays about how cookbooks/recipes are history, etc. I feel like at this point that argument has been made. I'd rather see people actually doing the history, or citing or something, not just these vague defenses of research that is theoretical

its pretty incredible how bad google is now. Searching with six keywords to find something hyper-specific that I wrote on my own website turns up completely unrelated social media posts from far more popular culinary accounts. bodes real well for ever reaching new readers.

in other grouchiness, while AI writing/art seems pretty obvious now, I will allow that it might not always be, and so I preemptively think people shouldn't be shamed for being tricked by it, just like I dont think we should blame people for being scammed. Because that's what it is, a scam.

i hate that smoking is so cool. im glad a lot of people switched to vaping which is not. theoretically, lighting someone's cigarette for them should be like holding the door open, but when someone does it in a movie they're usually about to ruin your life
