In Iowa, there are more concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) than grocery stores. Yet for most of the public, the location of nearby CAFOs and the amount of manure they may be producing is inaccessible. Until now.

With less than 5% of Iowans living on farms & only 2-3% actively engaged in farming, why is 90% of #Iowa policy focused on supporting farmers? Farming supports 22% of the Iowa economy. Meanwhile, 3.2 million Iowans drink contaminated water because legislators won't regulate farm discharge & runoff.

Abt 2.5 million lbs of nitrate-nitrogen will pass by the town of Wapello in the Iowa River today. About 1.6 million lbs will pass through keosauqua in the Des Moines River. 2 rivers, 1 day, 4.1 million lbs. That’s equal to contents of 1200 anhydrous ammonia nurse tanks that you see in fields now.

Chris Jones Campaigns to Clean Up Iowa’s Water
Three years ago Chris Jones was a decorated research engineer at the University of Iowa, where he directed Iowa’s network of stream pollution monitors and published details about state water quality in peer-reviewed scientific journals. Secure in his academic perch in 110-year-0ld Trowbridge Hall, Jones also contributed to his university-sponsored blog, where he prepared aggressive, masterfully written, and widely read reports that identified agriculture as the primary source of the state’s calamitous water pollution.

Filling up your gas tank with 15 gallons of e10 ethanol blended fuel amounts to about 30 pounds of soil lost to erosion, if the ethanol was produced with Iowa corn. Fill up 1x week, that's 1500 pounds per year, 2300 pounds if you use e15, and about 13,000 pounds if you use e85.
