This makes me really sad. I thought we'd won this fight 40 years ago. My favourite cricketer was this man. He was my hero and he opened my eyes to the evil of apartheid. I never thought of him as anything except a great cricketer who played for England. Do we really have to do this again?

Just finished this. Another fabulous Jonathan Coe book. Recommended reading for any 'progressive'. One of the characters is a bit me - an optimist who when depressed cheers himself up by watching the Marx Bros. Also includes the best description of being a working class kid at a posh Uni in 1980

Following the death of Gary Sobers, I've been reading some of my old cricket books and this one is good. Also, I'd forgotten how complete the 1984 West Indies massacre of Gower's England, was. Amazing cricket against a decent England team on paper, quite funny.
