The last few levels are good (though Cathedral is too long), and I especially love the final biome. Though by that point the artefacts aren’t worth collecting at all as the negative effects are so overwhelming. I’m happy I finished it, but I’m not going to try and platinum it.

Alex Moore @oldestpingu.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
But that means every artefact has a negative on it. So your game gets harder. And because you can’t access the later levels from earlier ones it becomes really hard to get a good build together. And when you finally do, and clear a boss to cleanse, you then get forced back to the hub 😬

The middle third of the game really dragged for me, and I nearly stopped playing because of the stacking of negative effects. The thread traversal being the key here: to access most of the side areas later on (and thus get goodies), you have to be in the eclipse.

This feels like a response to Returnal’s “runs are too long” criticism, but I’m not sure it’s an improvement. Some of the mid to late levels are still far too long, with objectives that need to be redone every single time.

Alex Moore @oldestpingu.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
The “come back stronger” mechanic is a nice addition, and the early levels - and bosses - do ultimately get easier. But you can’t do a continuous run through the entire game. You have to return to the hub, which resets your progression.

Finally finished Saros, including the second ending. Overall, like Returnal, I’ve loved playing it. Getting into a flow state always feels awesome, the weapons, visuals, haptics and sound all working beautifully. But there’s a few things that, imo, stop it being an absolute classic.

Night. The House of Chimes - a tower which you might immediately think of as Big Ben - is adrift in the River Thames. It still seems to be keeping time. In the background, a large, alien building looms over the city of London.

We did a Red Bull tie in to Dredd vs Death: I think we added a couple of Red Bull adverts in the level but the main thing I remember was Dredd riding towards the camera in the intro which kicked a can of Reb Bull towards the screen for a couple of frames. I doubt MS intend for it to be so subtle

Since I'm posting about the Alien book... Brighton (gaming/dev) folks: If I was to arrange a talk where I spoke with devs who worked on old (90s) Alien projects and modern (HD era) Alien projects, about those experiences, the differences, license holder involvement, etc... would you be into it?

“The Persistence” level generation and population was initially driven purely by random numbers and felt terrible. We slowly introduced more and more constraints & conditions to get it generating layouts that looked and played decent. I suspect that’s true of most “randomly generated” games.

I’ve had one of these for about 18 months, turn it on about once every 3 months. Wirelessly print to it from both my PC and my Mac. Haven’t tried from my phone yet. So far happy with it. Definitely a lot less painful than whatever it was I last had that wanted a subscription to verify ink.
A photo of an Epson ET-2860 printer and scanner. It’s not exciting but it seems to do the job.

We used this trick on a few PS2 pitches back in the day, but instead of mirrors used it for puddle reflections. We then duplicated and flipped the character meshes so enemies and the player appeared in them. Worked ok for a demo but too expensive and not 100% convincing for full release.

Given the cold sweat I’ve just come out in, it seems I’m still not over my last PC build. The BIOS only supported the ram I’d bought on a firmware version higher than it shipped with. It might only have been a few hours from realising what was happening to having it fixed, but it felt like 2 weeks

Alex Moore @oldestpingu.bsky.social · 02/09/2026
Not helped by the trend in modern BIOSes* giving absolutely no feedback when doing memory checks, spending up to 5 minutes outputting a blank screen while you sit there hoping for the best. * bioses? BIOSES? Is it an -es? Hmmm.

Hey. Thanks for reaching out :) It’s been a fair few years since I had access to the story, but from what I remember yes, the PredAlien would have technically destroyed the temple as they aren’t pure blood. We didn’t show it as I doubt we had the resources available to make the scene.
