Fascinating. Looking at the phonology, Hawaiʻian, Mangarevan, and the Marquesan varieties do seem to form a group. But Rapa Nui not only doesn't obviously pattern with them, but has at least one archaic feature not retained by any other Eastern Polynesian language.
Screenshot of a few sentences of the article:
"And 2,500 family trees built by resampling the data over and over. In 61% of those trees, Hawaiʻi and Rapa Nui pair off by themselves. Mangareva takes that spot about 10% of the time. The Marquesas, under 3%. Every method pointed the same direction."

I guess I have been impressed by his image as an Estophile. I don't know anything about Finnish communists in Finland in the 1930s, only know what nasty things are said about what exiled Finnish communists did in Ingria.

Twenty years ago, on October 7, 2006, Anna Politkovskaya was murdered by Putin’s henchmen. She had warned about the true nature of the russian regime and urged that it not be allowed to continue until it was too late. Western leaders chose to listen to the appeasers—or succumbed to corruption.

I think that there are lots of military folk in Kaliningrad. Those people might have a tendency to be more rabid than the general population. Besides, the Russian-national settlement there only dates from 1945. Recent settler colonialism. (Were the white farmers of Rhodesia Africanised?)

Of course, I have for decades firmly believed that the Russian oil industry is inherently evil (ask the indigenous peoples of the areas affected) and thus has to be undone completely.

Ott Heinapuu @ohpuu.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
There was an understanding in Libya that no side in the civil war will attack the oil industry to keep the money flowing (through the contested and strangely independent central bank). At the time, that seemed sensible.

I feel like people do not generally know when the last big bubonic plague outbreak was and how many people it killed (1855 in Yunnan, went worldwide, at least 15 million people, lasted for over a century.). There's a ton of apotropaic Chinese ritual from the period to ward it off.

Fortunately the Finnish military has been preparing for the next Russian aggression for about 80 years. Despite this, Finnish political culture has included a strong aversion to talking about this openly. (But this can be understood as Finland was formally not on the West's side in the Cold War.)

Two soldiers in camouflage uniforms and helmets holding rifles stand in front of a missile launcher system, silhouetted against a dramatic sunrise sky where a fighter jet streaks past trailing smoke. Warm sunset tones dominate the scene. Text in Ukrainian reads "Повітряні Сили" (Air Forces), "1 ЖОВТНЯ — День захисників та захисниць України!" (1 October — Day of Defenders of Ukraine!), and "Разом до перемоги!" (Together to Victory!). Image source: Ukrainian Air Forces. Alt text generated with Vibe (Mistral AI)
