tbh ALOT of people who work with artists need to be taught we're not a robot you can run thru the ground and then replace.

I just saw a reels of a guy saying to be a real comic artist you need to do two complete finished pages a day. Which isn’t very realistic I don’t think.

Things in the past sucked. Comic book artists did 4 books a month because they needed to eat and provide for families under contracts that should have been illegal and conditions that were brutal. Imagine what we could’ve had if publishers weren’t sleaze preying on the naive dreams of teenagers.

I probably didnt word that well-I should say watching a realistic film like Beginners is a raw nerve of despair. Watching BSD I can at least get through it without sobbing but still feel the cathartic release of having my experience reflected back to me/thx for coming to my Ted Talk!

Rachel Merrill Artist for Gil Thorp and Death To Pachuco! @ohhhaeee.bsky.social · 8h

Yea I think the realistic stuff is better suited if you havent personally gone through it? But it cant really capture the bottomless agony the way allegorical/unsubtle ones do. Big Little Lies season 2 sucked so hard but Meryl Streeps scream at losing her son hit the nail on the head.

Rachel Merrill Artist for Gil Thorp and Death To Pachuco! @ohhhaeee.bsky.social · 9h

Yea for some reason a film like BSD or Possession or The Innocents for me hits me on a gut level more so than watching a sobering/sad movie about someone dying of cancer in a realistic manner. I couldnt really watch that stuff but I can watched a heighted allegorical depiction of the same themes.

Especially thinking of the physical decay Dracula goes through, then gets better and is constantly desperately trying to say goodbye to Nina, and then Nina realizing whats happening but neither are really able to get the perfect "goodbye" they both need. All that stuff hit home for me hard.

Rachel Merrill Artist for Gil Thorp and Death To Pachuco! @ohhhaeee.bsky.social · 9h

I did not like this movie much until I saw Rob Eggers Nosferatu which I detested. Gave Bram Stokers Dracula another whirl and it really blew me away about how its trying to say goodbye to the dead/dying. My mom passed from cancer a 10yrs ago, this really hit home of what thats like to experience.

Ha itll be funny if I ended up loving his work but find *him* not great luckily I am an adult so I imagine Ill just roll with it. Still its nice to run into folks like McMurtry who does seemed to have worked hard to make the world a better place on top of being a great writer.

The rape case is drawing attention to a previous failure by Cornell's president, Michael Kotlikoff. Last year, he caved in a $60 million settlement to Trump, undermining DEI and free speech on campus. His capitulation has the stench of complicity. www.salon.com/2026/10/09/w...

I am sure Ill get to BM someday but rn more interested in reading as much Larry McMurtry work as possible. Plus the journal he founded is one of my best playing clients, AND he was in love with Polly Platt and wrote Terms Of Endearment WHICH SHE THEN PRODUCED as a tribute to Polly.

Larry McMurtry himself is a FASCINATING individual, especially as someone who also grew up in the Southeast. BM is on my list but unfortunately I read a review of a bio on McCarthy that made him seem so much less compelling a person than McMurtry was.

Its pretty wild to recall reading that the documentary genre is dead when 3 of the most anticipated films dropping this fall are You Can See Everything, Naza, and Musk. Primetime is not a documentary but the influence of the genre in terms of style and subject is obviously undeniable.
