Kaori and the Blue Lotus a commissioned painting by Odera Igbokwe www.odera.net | www.patreon.com/odera
A figure with brown skin and big curly hair appears from the center of a giant lotus flower. They are bathed in blue and golden light and surrounded by smaller lotus flowers emerging from the water.

This piece was commissioned by the author of Beneath the Burning Wave, which features a duo of multiracial non-binary twins accessing magic from their ancestral bloodlines. This painting references that same main character.

And no shade, but Odera is such an Igbo name. A very African name that is also a family name, and I have seen amongst Kenyans as well. So if youre OC is a tan ginger who is nutting, but has nothing to do with Kola nut???? Then I will need to take up some more space 🥴

I will absolutely be posting new art AND reposting art from the archives specifically with my name. Because if I search Odera on here and consistently see an OC getting her hole tickled??? Babyyyyy, save some of that search space for meeeee. My paintings need to get a little wet tooooo 😂

The Strength by Odera Igbokwe from the Spirit Child divination paintings www.odera.net | www.patreon.com/odera

A monochromatic prism of oranges, pinks, and yellows. A mammalian deity's eyes peer into the viewer, as plantains emerge from their ears and horns. A broad shouldered, robed femme holds two branches/wands emerging from the deity.
---

The Strength is the avatar of power, sustenance, and balance. A robed figure stands on top of a massive mythological mammal covered in plants, leaves, and plantains emerging from their horns. The Strength is the bond, the possibility, and the ecosystem that these figures create.

The Strength asks us to question how we wield power and who gets to define power. The Strength asks for discernment and balance in determining who do we deem as worthy of humanity, who is asserted as a god, and who is viewed as a monster.

The Garden by Odera Igbokwe from the Spirit Child divination paintings www.odera.net | www.patreon.com/odera
A matriarch in a blue layered gown and matching headwrap holds an nza (horsetail hair) as she stares into the viewers eyes and sits on a chair.
Above her a woman emerges from a green garden, wearing green and golden gowns that flicker and reflect the greenery she emerged from. She has green spira; braids, green lipstick, brown skin, and hold a baby in her arms. The brown cherubic ball has flowers in her hair and points a single finger at the mother.

In the far background, flowers emerge from geometric structures, and a large face appears from the earthen sky and smells the flowers.

The Garden is the avatar of matriarchs, ancestry in progress, nature, and nurture. Emerging from the soil and in full bloom, they create a cross generational ecosystem that connects the physical and spiritual planes.

The Garden reminds us that there will always be a season for renewal, ancestral gifts, and cyclical periods to bloom. The Garden asks us how to bask in the gifts and honor the alchemy that has been cultivated by our communities, chosen, and unchosen families.

An illustration inspired by Octavia Butler’s Wild Seed
A digital painting by Odera Igbokwe circa 2015. Anyanwu stands twisted in a toxic yellow but fertile landscape. The mood is eerie and feels in between the physical and spiritual plane. As she stands almost halfway between transformation, a dark force clings and melds into her arms.

I’m remembering how an art teacher was frustrated by my work because the figures weren’t “idealized” enough “The hands are bit too big for that woman’s body” “Let’s soften the bone structure” I immediately knew this was not a critique I would internalize. Because that’s where the JUICE was.

Random yt men on my feed trying to protect their friend bc I publicly called him out. And now this guy is simply parroting the tenants of white supremacist respectability and fear tactics “They could sue you” “It could limit damages if they sue…” “If youre afraid for your safety go to the police”

For example, moments like this hand or the way the figuration plays with the tension of realism versus the spirit and feeling of the figure are a major part of what make my paintings dance and reflective of my queer nonbinary center

This painting was originallly prompted by virtue signaling & performative compliments from yt ppl desperate to interact with Black femmes. But with recent behaviors and encounters, I think it extends into the concept of being put on a pedestal which is just a shinier form of objectification
virtue signals for the ghana must go gworl, is a six foot oil painting depicting a Black woman holding her grocery bags as she gazes. Surrounding her are spirits, memories, and an audience. Each of these characters are on the cusp of praise or mocking the main figure. And above her fro are two glowing portraits potentially referencing spirit guides, ancestors, or the necessity to tap into strength and protection even while doing a task as mundane as grocery shopping.

The painting is a field of bright oranges, subtle browns, and a deep blues.
The figure glows with a radiant yellow and carries two ghana must go bags filled with vegetables.

They'd judge any random man who came on screen and debate whether or not they would fuck them. All of this was happening while there still wasn't alot of room to have a decent conversation. After that dinner I figured okay, these are community i am friendly with but these aren't *my people*
140
Odera Igbokwe @odera.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
The actual dinner was fine, but again I am thinking to myself what capacity for friendship do I have with these people. They said some things that made me uncomfortable: that yt leftist thing where they try to distance themselves from whiteness, or believe they could pass for not white.

Odera Igbokwe @odera.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
Upon our second meeting they invited us to their home. Part of me thought this was a level jump, as I know *I* am not inviting people to my home upon second meeting. But I figured hosting was their preferred way of deepening friendship.
140
Odera Igbokwe @odera.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
but I did notice it was very difficult to have a conversation with them. Him and his partner were constantly talking over each other, let alone making space for us. It was not ideal, but I anticipated "there might be alot of neurodivergence across the four of us that makes communication tougher"

Odera Igbokwe @odera.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
But I also have been trying to say yes to new people, and also recognizing in a city like Vancouver people who follow through and show up are important. So my partner and I eventually agreed to meet them and their partner in the park. Nothing bad happened upon first meeting...

Odera Igbokwe @odera.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
I first connected with them on here and was empathetic towards their plight. Making friends in Vancouver can be hard. People can be passive, fickle, and greyed out. But my intuition told me, this person is a bit overeager to meet. They keep mentioning my partner and I's attractiveness.

Usually I keep this space focused on art & we will eventually circle back. But I have to ring the alarm about the yt gay in Vancouver I met via bluesky: gaybitterskeets I typically protect my energy and typically funnel that back into artmaking. But especially to my QTBIPOC please avoid that man.
