Without Papa Mau sharing his sacred traditional ecological and navigational knowledge, PVS would not have successfully sailed the maiden voyage of Hōkū'le'a in 1975. He laid the stick, as he said, upon which solidarity could be built. What a guy. May we continue to follow in his wake 🙏🏽🌊
A quote from Papa Mau Piailug featuring a yellow toned black and white circular photo of a shirtless Mau looking into the distance while holding a line in his right hand that is knotted. He has a slight smile but serious look of concentration and has dark brown skin.

The quote reads: I have laid the stick that connects people together. Now it is up to you, your generations and the ones to come, to build upon that stick a bridge that will ensure the free sharing of information and teaching between the two peoples until the day we become united again as a single people, as we were once before; before men separated us with their imaginary political boundaries of today's Polynesia and Micronesia.

While Polynesian folks often get most of the Hollywood cred for being seafarers, Micronesians, particularly Carolinians (some of whom call my islands home as well) were one of those rare groups who kept the knowledge current, and safeguarded their traditions while colonialism disrupted other places.

I start with how folks know Micronesia: the seafarer who shared knowledge with the Polynesian Voyaging Society contributing to Polynesian seafaring revitalization was Papa Mau Piailug from Satawal, a "Carolinian" island in Yap, a stop on the ancestral Micronesian trade route, the Metawal wóól.

Good morning from the Marianas 🧡🪸 its 930 AM on Indigenous People's Day AND its Commonwealth Cultural Day ✨️🌊🇲🇵! Biba Marianas! Unlike Guåhan to our South, the Northern Marianas has two Indigenous groups: Chamorros & Carolinians 💅🏾 both are seafarers. Picking this back up with Polynesia. My oh my.

Only in America can you get shot by carjackers and it's your fault, because the carjackers are part of a secret police force that target people based on the color of their skin.

A digital illustration of the world’s largest terrestrial arthropod, the Coconut Crab. It’s a beefy articulated tank of a beast: heavy and strong-looking claws and long legs emerging from under a roundish domed carapace, with a vaguely comical head segment and two long antennae amid all that. Colored in shades of brown and blue with linear striations along all its limbs and spots on its carapace. A speech balloon with a very long tail that wraps around one of the crab’s legs reads ‘maybe it will happen today’. You should look up some coconut crab images soon.

So tell me, will you still be supporting/buying/drinking Fiji Water? 🧐 As Teresia Teaiwa once said, the Pacific must "island" the world. We must make island a verb. Everyone should behave like they live on islands with finite, precious resources. We have been, still do, and will continue to 🌊🏝

Returning to what I said 2 skeets ago, not only do colonial agendas thrive on us islanders remaining disorganized/uncoordinated/uneducated, they RELY on ppl within the Imper1al cores (most of y'all reading this) + diaspora to be ignorant of the role PIs play, and rights to sovereignty we should have
111
Ocean Lani 🇲🇵🇬🇺 @oceanlani.bsky.social · 13h
Other Melanesian countries struggle uniquely with their varying flavors of neocolonialism. For ex., Fiji's LITERAL water being exploited, diverted & sold to ppl elsewhere as "Fiji Water" while their own iTaukei (Indigenous Fijians) struggle for basic healthcare & wages, while expats get paid 5x more
122
Ocean Lani 🇲🇵🇬🇺 @oceanlani.bsky.social · 13h
Just in these past 16 skeets, I told you more about Pacific Islanders than you'll ever see/hear in our educational programming in schools. Colonial agendas (capitalism/imperialism) RELY on Pacific Islanders lacking unity + solidarity in order for them to continue exploiting our resources & peoples.

PICTs = Pacific Island Countries & Territories Dividing the Pacific started as early as cartographers and colonizers describing us using their colonial descriptors of "Micro-Mela-Polynesians". The ocean, our lived experiences & knowledge systems of stewarding it, and coming from it, UNITES us.
221
Ocean Lani 🇲🇵🇬🇺 @oceanlani.bsky.social · 13h
They use things like AUKUS as a point of civilizing/"stabilizing" the Pacific, reinforcing a toxic dynamic by pitting AUS/US powers against Ch1na/Asia, excluding Indigenous rightsholders. Their framing erases their active role in subjugating PICTs, while erasing/exploiting us in a myriad of ways.

Solomon Islands & Vanuatu are often described by outside academics who make careers pushing Imperialistic narratives that reinforce these Melanesian countries lack of sovereignty. They use xenophobia + anti-Blackness to paint Indigenous Melanesians as corrupt, unworthy, unable to steward themselves.
122
Ocean Lani 🇲🇵🇬🇺 @oceanlani.bsky.social · 15h
Other Melanesian countries: Vanuatu, home to ni-Vanuatu (the name for the Indigenous ppl), as well as the Solomon Islands. Both have deapt with intense climate + geopolitical instability recently, notably Vanuatu & Kanaky were absent from the last 2024 Festival of Pacific Arts & Culture in Hawai'i.

Ocean Lani 🇲🇵🇬🇺 @oceanlani.bsky.social · 16h
The badly-regulated nickel mining in particular has had a horrible effect on the health of their near&deep ocean, where the Indigenous Kanaks believe souls go to rest. Theyve recently been advocating against deep sea mining (despite having little say from lack of sovereignty) due to this experience.

Ocean Lani 🇲🇵🇬🇺 @oceanlani.bsky.social · 16h
Other sovereignty-related elephants in Melanesia: Kanaky (New Caledonia), an occupied overseas territory of France, home to the Kanak peoples & one of the world's largest island barrier reefs. They been going THROUGH IT the past yrs in particular, being a highly exploited "possession" of France.

Apologies, popped out for an impromptu snorkel at my ancestral beach 🥰 I believe in my bones one day Papua will be liberated of these colonial constraints. I hope within our lifetimes to see her liberated and her people together once more, sovereignty intact & respected 🙏🏽🇵🇬[Morning Star Flag emoji]

My Pasifika fam @purepapua.bsky.social here is always bringing light to their peoples and for that I am grateful, to continue to be kept informed as the silencing of West Papuans due to economic situations and poverty is another intersecting issue.

Ocean Lani 🇲🇵🇬🇺 @oceanlani.bsky.social · 21h
Of course, the best person to speak about West Papua are Papuans, and particularly those from occupied West Papua, formerly a colony of Denmark and who absolutely must be liberated. So saying Free West Papua/Papua Merdeka is a statement of solidarity with Black Pacific Islanders✊🏽

Ocean Lani 🇲🇵🇬🇺 @oceanlani.bsky.social · 21h
Theres a lot more to be said about West Papua. If folks are critical of other Pacific Island countries voting against Pacific sovereignty or interests, you will need to see who the puppet masters behind the scenes are who are controlling votes in the U.N. & leadership of our countries in general.

Papua is the largest island landmass in the Pacific, holds most of the Pacific's population, linguistic/cultural diversity & biodiversity due to the richness of Melanesia. This has also made them a target for greedy capitalists & Imperialists who benefit from greenwashed "conservation" initiatives.

Ocean Lani 🇲🇵🇬🇺 @oceanlani.bsky.social · 21h
In Melanesia, there are multiple "elephants" in the room. We start with West Papua & their decades-long, brutal occupation by Indonesia. These injustices of Indigenous Melanesians & Papuans are horrific & continue to this day bc of the bountiful abundance stewarded by Papuans since time immemorial.

The Marshall Islands people (Rimajol) in particular have also shouldered the forever-burden of nucl3ar testing imposed by the Amerikkkans. Their people's sovereignty and struggles have not ever been adequately acknowledged/compensated. They have ALWAYS been foremost in Pacific leadership against it.

Elsewhere in Micronesia are the Freely Associated States, Marshall Islands (Majol), & Palau (Belau), who are being increasingly and heavily militarized by US, after having endured centuries of religious missionaries and their programming. Nobody's safe from Imperialism or Christ1anity in Micronesia.

In Micronesia, there is Guåhan or Guam, who remains on the U.N.'s list of non-self-governing territories. A territory occupied by the U.S. since the Spanish-Amerikkkan war. There is also the CNMI, where I am from. Both lack voting representation in Congress & can't vote in US Presid3ntial elections.

On Monday, 10/12 - Indigenous People's Day, remember that Indigenous Pacific Islanders throughout Micronesia, Melanesia, and Polynesia have been fighting for their sovereignty to be recognized in full since the 1600's. No one in the Pacific and elsewhere is free until we are all free, forreal.

Not only is this true, one of the reasons tomatoes are extra good is that they contain MSG and drying them concentrates it. You can also add MSG to things.

Final word: even if you act this way "ironically" or in your mind, on a joking level ("its not that serious/deep"), women also dont need or want to be around that energy constantly 🤷🏽‍♀️ and thats ok. Its just a projection of your insecurity that you advertise to the world, thinking its not that deep.

Women cannot be the ones to make you unlearn ingrained hate/dislike/irritation of women. Because you might not be aware of misogyny as a spectrum, but we are constantly reminded of it in everyday life. It doesn't mean youre a bad person, but it does indicate you are not ready to be an ideal partner.

All that to say, if you as a man has ever been ghosted and didn't know why, consider this as a possibility. What you don't realize or are unaware of, is something women are very much aware of behaviorally. Its the easiest way to separate the wheat from the chaff. Women cannot do the work for you.

If you're out there on the dating streets (and even non-dating streets!) this is the softest indication of a red flag to women like me. Because if this is how you instinctively respond, this is not my work to reprogram you into a "team/we're on the same side" mentality. If I see this, I'm ghosting.

A lot of manosphere + adjacent misogynist media will prime men's brains into *immediate* us/me vs them/her responses. Your brain will go down that like a well-trodden path just like how your brain responds to other familiar/comfortable addictions. Its immediately apparent to those who are aware.

People are discussing how Halloween candy is so terrible these days. A reminder that alot of the candy we eat is made with women’s prison labor. Russell Stover’s factory in Kansas busses in 150 women a day via a convict leasing program to staff their candy factory.
Russell Stover has begun using prison labor to make candy in
Kansas
A Russell Stover candy factory in Kansas has begun hiring incarcerated workers through a work release program, Eoin Higgins reports in his newsletter, The Flashpoint. About 150 women are bussed in from the Topeka Correctional Facility and paid $14 an hour, but the prison keeps some of their wages for room and board, taxes, transportation, and other expenses. When all is said and done, they take home less than $6 per hour. These deductions are high, but elsewhere in the country, they're even higher: In our May series on prison
