The AI has been good so far. Only gripe I might have is that the team might not use powers as often as I like. Could be a setting I haven’t found yet though. 🤔 But I’m managing just fine!

I’m playing an Elf Rogue Shadow Dragon for my first play through and it’s been a really good time. Love, love, love that they brought back full size sword dual wielding! Makes that offhand attack even more devastating. 🙂

You can speed up or slow the combat down by utilizing the abilities wheel to direct your team to attack certain enemies using assigned abilities. The wheel pauses the action so you can review the battlefield and strategize if that’s more your cup of tea.

Combat is fun! I like the realtime action. You can play the game as a hack and slash, rain death from a bow, or control the field with magic. Or maybe even a combo! Who doesn’t like the option of shooting enemies from afar before they can get to you then switching to your swords to finish them off?

Now that this has gone on way too long my recommendation is if you like RPGs with good world building, good stories, and good companions you should give Dragon Age: The Veilguard a shot. It’s not perfect, no game is, but it’s a great time.

Because of the new setting the devs were able to reference what has happened while creating something fresh. It makes it easy for someone who has never played a DA game to jump right into the action and story.

The game is in a whole new setting. Somewhere we’d heard about but could never visit (outside of popping into the Black Emporium) which leaves it open for new exploration and new cultures to get to know.

The game is a continuation of the past three games, the comics, the books, and other various media. However, you can jump right in and not feel left out because they do a good job with exposition.

The game leans hard on the lore that they’ve created during their world building across all games and media. But! That doesn’t mean you’ll be lost if you’ve never played a Dragon Age game before because it does a fantastic job at getting you looped in via conversations, notes, and codex entries.

Only problem with that expansive of a character creator is how long I can get sucked into making a character. However, I’ll never call that a bad thing since I find it relaxing to create characters. 🤣

The character creator. Oh my word folks! It’s amazing. There are several starting base characters that you can either just go with or customize to make it your own. There are so many options for customization. DA: Inquisition was great and this game just expanded on it big time!

Plus the environments are beautiful. There’s photo mode to take advantage of the beautiful settings and lighting. I’ve taken quite a few photos with it so far. The camera is free so you can get some great shots no matter where you’re standing.

There is still quite a bit to explore though! So I really appreciate that. Enemies spawn and respawn to keep you leveling and gaining equipment. It’s always a bummer if you clear an area and it just stays empty even though it’s supposedly ‘contested’ the whole time.

I seem to be in the minority here but I miss the open world. I know I’m crazy but I love being able to see a mountain in the far distance, run to it, and climb that mountain! The limited, fenced in, areas feel a bit stifling to me. Makes the game feel very on rails in some ways.

I have found some of the dialogue weird at times. Maybe a weird read or something that was tacked on later. But for the most part haven’t been jarred out of conversations too much by unnecessary yelled lines or out of tone responses.

Really wish there was more banter or conversation opportunities out in the world. I miss being able to speak to my folks out and about. Maybe ask them about what we just saw or went through in real time. Interactions are limited to the missions or the base.
