A Texan friend once said,
"Air conditioning should be a human right."
I had just left Minnesota and thought she was joking. She told me how serious heat waves really were, and now I've lived through them— and paid for it in more ways than one.
We had a heat dome over the city this summer, trapping humidity and heat and baking everything inside. I have a neurological condition where my body can't regulate temperature normally.
A heat wave could be deadly for me...
So even when I couldn't afford it, I ran my AC most days during the summer to not get sick.I ran it on the energy saving setting and weatherproofed my apartment with
reflective film on the windows, but my bill still came out to
almost $3oo during the worst months-and that was for one room in a studio apartment.
Nobody should have to choose between staying alive or going into credit card debt to be functional, but that's often the position I find myself in, thanks to ConEd jacking up the prices.
My parents live in a town with municipal utilities, and they pay less than I do to keep the lights on for an entire house!
ConEd is punishing people with
disabilities on top of making NYC unlivable.SICK OF BEING STALKED BY CORPORATE MONSTERS

After many requests, my super refused to remove the cabinetry.
For two years, I was trapped between my landlord and ConEd.
Inspectors showed up every few months with the same request, and
letters frequently arrived threatening fees.
I spent hours on the phone explaining that my building refused to help, but ConEd offered no solutions. I was eventually charged a $100 fee for

Whether it’s data centers or our energy system, our communities are getting ignored so oligarchs can get richer. In New York, socialists are leading the fight to make sure our public resources are putting the public good first.

Socialists Can Lead in the Fight Against Al Data Centers
By Liza Featherstone | Sep 09, 2026
"Americans across the political spectrum are coming together to fight against Al data centers and for solutions like public power. Beholden to big donors, mainstream politicians won't meet the moment - but the Left can."Seven in ten Americans oppose the construction of a large AI data center in their own community. In fact, there are few issues that unite Americans across the political spectrum like this one does. Even among Republicans, more say that new data center construction is bad than good. Yet most mainstream politicians, Democratic and Republican alike, are failing to meet the moment.
That leaves socialists, who are unbeholden to large donors with vested interests in the Al boom, in a unique position. Democratic socialists are better positioned than either major party to stand up to oligarchy, a twenty-first-century American gangrene that every data center fight seems to reveal anew."What socialists are fighting for is public goods for the public," Shrestha says, and these fights build the case for publicly owned and controlled energy.
In New York state, DSA and its elected officials - including Shrestha and State Senator Kristen Gonzalez - are pushing for a statewide moratorium on new data center construction. In a compromise, Governor Kathy Hochul issued an executive order establishing a watered-down version, which pauses new construction for one year.
Socialists in New York State are further along in the fight for publicly owned renewable energy, having passed the Build Public Renewables Act in 2023 (although implementation of that law remains an ongoing struggle). But in the Hudson Valley, as in Tucson, one of the next big campaigns is to socialize the electric utility, as many small towns and cities in America already do.Gonzalez is also working on legislation to end tax subsidies to data centers. In Rockland County alone, state and local agencies have committed at least $321 million in power and tax subsidies to data centers. In a recent executive order, Hochul expressed an intention to work with the legislature to end such subsidies. But that intention has not yet become law, and given her record on climate and her history of coziness with polluters, there's ample reason to believe it will take a big fight to make it so. If it weren't for socialist legislators like Gonzalez, ending subsidies for data centers wouldn't even be part of the Democratic policy conversation.

BREAKING
Fossil Fuel Front
Claims Credit for Hochul's
Pro-Fossil Fuel Shift
By Katya Schwenk | Aug 28, 2026At a fossil fuel industry conference in April, the pipeline-backed group Natural Allies for a Clean Energy Future took credit for Hochul's change of heart, boasting of "high-level engagement" with her office. According to the group's executive director, Susan Waller, Natural Allies provided the governor's office with in-house polling on New Yorkers' views on natural gas shortly before Hochul's announcement."They had their pollsters call our pollster and sit down and go through it,"
Waller told a crowd of fossil fuel executives and lobbyists. "And within a very short time - weeks - Kathy Hochul went with all of the above."
According to slides and audio of Waller's presentation reviewed by The Lever, Hochul's flip-flop marked a victory for Natural Allies and its corporate benefactors' aggressive 2026 political strategy amid changing headwinds in the Democratic Party: "Leveraging concern about affordability to change the politics around natural gas."The materials provide an inside look into how pipeline companies and fossil fuel interests, eyeing the fault lines running through the Democratic Party, are trying to quell the party's burgeoning populist wing, win the support of establishment actors like Hochul, and build, in their words, a
"bulwark against the far-left."

How can this be normal when it's dangerous to breathe or exert ourselves in our work environment outside for a big chunk of the summer?""The ironic thing is that solar is being built... but it's such a small drop in the bucket for what we need in this city. And like my coworker pointed out it's only getting worse with the data centers, those are jobs but not here and they're only gonna jack up our energy bills.""FUCK ALL OF THIS"
"We gotta build so much publicly owned low cost renewables with union labor ASAP. And we gotta take over fucking ConEd."

Yesterday we got a DM from a union construction worker on an outdoor electrical project today in the belly of the climate crisis. This is what they said about working in a heatwave with an air quality index of 200.
DISPATCH FROM THE FRONTLINES
A union construction worker shares the reality of construction under another heatwave and wildfire smoke."I'm a union construction worker at
JFK Airport and working outside today was fucking brutal. We start work at 6:30 AM now because the afternoons are too hot. After lunch, the real feel temperature was 96 degrees, and the sky was so hazy you couldn't see the Manhattan skyline like you clearly can on a regular day.""You could smell the charring of Canadian forest hundreds of miles away, making the air thick and hard to breathe. Wind gusts were strong, but it was just blowing whatever smoke particles were in the air.""The unforgiving sun beating down on us would've been worse if the wildfire smoke didn't block some of the light.
But trading melted legs for itchy eyes and an irritated nose isn't great."

The fight for public power and a safe future is far from over. But until then, we’re also sharing tips and resources to help protect each other. Stay cool, stay safe, and join the fight to take back our power.
In New York City, our electricity is controlled by Con Edison, a private, for-profit utility. Who owns power matters. During extreme heat, blackouts and brownouts can happen when the grid is overwhelmed, but Con Edison also decides where power is reduced to keep the system running.
In a climate crisis, no corporation should decide which communities are left in the dark.
what are
BLACKOUTS?
A complete loss of electricity. During a heatwave, blackouts can leave people without air conditioning, refrigeration, medical equipment, and other essentials, putting lives at risk.
what are
BROWNOUTS?
A temporary reduction in the amount of electricity supplied to an area, causing lights to dim and appliances to receive less power. During a heatwave, planned blackouts or intentional brownouts are used to reduce demand, but they also raise important questions about who loses power and
who stays connected.
