Pleasantly surprised at how good the SC25 submissions I'm reviewing are. Numerical analysis and mixed precision are making a very strong showing this year. It's almost as if there is more to life than IEEE binary64...

1. LLM-generated code tries to run code from online software packages. Which is normal but 2. The packages don’t exist. Which would normally cause an error but 3. Nefarious people have made malware under the package names that LLMs make up most often. So 4. Now the LLM code points to malware.

Third day of the #MPI_Forum MPI-5.0 release canditate meeting driving #HPC and #AI forward. We are caught into the meeting room at @hlrs-hpc.bsky.social all day – nice weather outside, good mood & good progress inside.

My 22 y/o cousin and I are talking business and technology. I gave Kodak as an example of a company that lost their edge. He had never heard of Kodak. 1. Damn, I am old. 2. Never let your company pull a Kodak.

I just spent 15 minutes debugging why configure couldn’t find my Fortran compiler, only to discover that I misspelled the substring “fortran” *multiple* times. I caught “forran” but had to reboot before I noticed “fortan”. I am on the ISO Fortran committee.

"Roadmap on methods and software for electronic structure based simulations in chemistry and materials" has some good stuff in it. Very terse writing, so it's not a waste of time, hopefully. iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1...

There's a Gordon Bell finalist using LAMMPS on Cerebras (arxiv.org/abs/2405.07898). They claim "a 179-fold improvement in timesteps per second versus the Frontier GPU-based Exascale platform". Sounds great, but the speedup vs a Broadwell CPU cluster is 3-4x less. That's curious.
