I've seen the future and it's bleak. Coming to an inbox near you soon too I imagine. I don't use LLMs for anything I do and never will but it's depressing that I wrote something that no one ever read before it was rejected. 🧪 #academicsky

My god, the sheer number of wasted human work hours that these statistics expose. Think of all the great stuff they could have been doing rather than writing doomed proposals. Almost anything would have been better!

Most plastic pollution washing up in Seychelles comes from nearby fisheries and shipping lanes. Much probably comes from foreign ships operating within Seychellois waters (such as European fishing fleets). Exciting new study led by Alex Albinski (my first research student!): doi.org/10.1016/j.ma...

It should be unacceptable for funding agencies to refuse to give feedback on unsuccessful proposals. It's just so disrespectful to the hours upon hours that people have invested in them.

But I don't think that's enough to explain how nationalistic/defensive people get about fishing/farming industries. We saw this during Brexit, people were losing their heads over fishing rights and farming regulations even though they don't contribute that much to the economy.

Finally, next door is the Fukui Jomon Museum (Jomon was the first human culture in the Japanese archipelago). The two museums do a great job of playing on their synergy, e.g. the Jomon museum shows how C14 dates for its artefacts were refined by the Suigetsu-derived radiocarbon calibration.

Sverduck came with as well. This has got to be the most scientifically in-depth museum I've visited. They went into real detail into C14 calibrations, millennial-scale climate variability, palaeoenvironment proxies, etc. Despite being so niche, it was pretty busy!

I went to the Fukui Varve Museum at Suigetsu-ko! The centrepiece is a full set of thin sections spanning the 45 m long Suigetsu varve record, which has played a key role in radiocarbon calibration (and therefore recent palaoclimate, archaeology, etc).
Entrance to the Lake Suigetsu Varve Museum. Close up of the varve thin sections on display, showing annual banding. View of the museum showing a long hall with thin sections.

We got a new paper out! The Late Miocene Mediterranean had some stark gradients from east to west. But did they have any effect on the biology? The ecology? Reefs? We show it did!  🧪⚒️ Link: www.sciencedirect.com/science/artic…
Environmental gradients in modern and Late Miocene Mediterranean. A) Modern temperature gradient in the Mediterranean Sea based on annual average Sea Surface Temperature is based upon MODIS-Aqua data for the year 2024, downloaded from GIOVANNI, Nasa, (Acker and Leptoukh, 2007). B) Modern primary productivity gradient in the Mediterranean Sea based upon annual average chlorophyll α concentrations from MODIS-Aqua data for the year 2024, downloaded from GIOVANNI, Nasa, (Acker and Leptoukh, 2007). C) Environmental gradient in the Mediterranean during the Late Miocene based on quantitative analysis of carbonate producers. The late Tortonian to early Messinian palaeogeography is here presented alongside a conceptual synthesis of the reef carbonates. This synthesis, derives from DCA focused on coral-rich facies (Fig. 6B), one of the analysis where the pattern highlighted in the discussion can be clearly seen. It is placed in the centre of the basin for the purpose of visualization (the position of the plot is schematic and not geographically accurate, although it effectively illustrates the main gradients across the Mediterranean area). It features axes for some key components (SERP, BRY, EBF, and LBF) oriented to reflect their spatial distribution across the basin as discussed in the text.. The palaeogeographic map integrates the late Tortonian reconstructions of Dercourt et al. (2000) and the Tortonian palaeogeographies of Perrin and Bosellini (2008). The connection with the Atlantic Ocean is based on the detailed reconstruction by Roveri et al. (2025) for the late Tortonian–early Messinian interval. This period is considered the most representative for the entire dataset, which incorporates sites from across the Western, Central, and Eastern Mediterranean.
